P*ge2 Strive Friday, July 19, 1974 Exorcism — Fact Or Fiction It seems today that there is a great f'eal of controversy about a number of things. One of the main conflicts is the idea of Exorcism. Exorcism was almost completely hidden, an act of the middle ages until recently. The changing world and the film, “The Exocist” which opened December 25, 1973 as of this year brought about these great changes. More than four million people have paid $10 million to see this film written and produced by William Blatty. The movie was filmed at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C., it took over two years to produce this film. Exorcism is the casting out of demons. It first of all takes a possessed person and then you need a Catholic bishop. To form the task of exorcism it takes or is composed of the imposition of hands, which the Exorcist lays on the possessed forehead, and the use of holy water which he sprinkles on the body. The present of a crucifix is always present. It is further stated that the priest wears a purple stole, symbol of church authority. To most people it is an amazing fact that most Catholics of this day don’t have an official Exorcist. There are more than 250 bishops in the United States, they keep their own records and there is no noted records on the number of Exorcisms held. There are two main groups, people that believe in Exorcism and the people that don’t. It is extraordinary that the two groups both mainly consist of religious background. Some think that is an act of god to cast out * demons. They quote from the bible from the gospels of the Acts (Matthew 12:27; Acts 19:13). This quotation states that there is in deed Demonic possession. While religious people on the non-believing side state that the whole idea of demons possessing the body is fiddle faddle. They claim it is only letting it be known that the devil is stronger than God for he is overcoming his work. Church officials do not approve of exorcisms automatically. Unlike psychiatrists, exorcists accept extrasensory perception and other forms as unusual psychic powers as natural phenomena that could rule out demonic possession. Even though the devil has fallen on hard times in recent centuries, it still seems that modern man needs his “Devil” in the same way that he needs his God. You either believe in exorcisms or you do not. It is up to the individual and everyone must make up his or her mind concerning it. But as long as people seem to think this way there will remain constant Exorcism. Dear Chief: This past summer has really been g;reat! The people were fantastic: the classes helpful; and the games of basketball and volleyball fun. I really enjoyed the trips to Atlantic Beach and to the Outer Banks—man, they were outa sight! I hope to come back next year. See you then. W. C. Dear Chief: Food is a very basic part of life. The food served at Wesleyan cafeteria has been pretty good. It was good last semester, while I was a student, and for a week or so this summer. However, Wesle yan now has a catering service. I realize that financially, its for the betterment of the school and students. Finances is a good thing to keep a tab on, but I feel “good food” would help in many aspects. As for one, to start the day with a delicious breakfast is really nice. But lately, I haven’t been having a nice breakfast. For the food overall. I’ll Uve. That’s about all. I would like to express my main opinion. If the food is not going to improve, at least throw away what we had last week! “Like the salads!” Bill Medlin Dear Chief: I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone in the Upward Bound Prog^ram. Being in the program has been an experience that I would gladly live through again. By being in the program I have broaden my outlook in life and plan to reach my goals. If I had not been in the program I could most definintely say that my plans would be all together different from what they are now. All I am trying to say is that everyone in the Upward Bound Program has helped me in some way and I am saying thank you. May Upward Bound do it’s thing for many years to come. Lovingly, QJ Dear Chief, All I always wanted to know about the birds, and was afraid to ask was answered by the bees in Development. I only want to add is my stomach runneth over from the cafeteria goulash. The cafeteria manager should be given extra points on his contract for his excellent choice of catering service because for 7 days per week, we only have hotdogs, pork and beans and rice. As you know there’s no place like Hardee’s. Thank you, Raymond Lynch Dear Chief: I couldn’t sleep for 3 darn days, in my “own room!” I layed down on my bed to rest. Then, all of a sudden, there it was. I jumped up in a flash, but it was too late; it had already done its work. There on my left foot— one bumpt, then on my leg, then my arm. I got out of bed, and hunted one hour. No sign of it. I turned my rooms lights out, and I heard it coming. So I dived under the covers in 89 degree weather. It was so hot, so miserable, and I was getting sweaty. So I would show it how smart I was. I took my pillow, my alarm clock, my watch, and left the room. I went down to the men’s lobby to sleep for the night. I lay my things out and had begun to stretch out, when I saw a big black spider! It was crawling up the sofa, man! I moved so fast, that I smashed my hand on a bettle. I went back to my room to see if it had left, but no! That dam, blasted mosquito had taken my bed! Even now, while I am writing I know the mosquito is waiting for me. William Gray Dear Chief: We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Up ward Bound program; to the tutors past and present; to our fellow students during the past years; and most importantly to our past and present directors; Dr. Ralph James, Ms. Daisy Thorp, and Dr. Sim Wilde. Through the years we have grown and matured with their help, and through their gui dance we now begin to attain our goals. As we go our separate ways, we will look (Please turn to Page 7) Upward Bound — A Six-Week Dream This was my first year at Wesleyan during the summer session. My imagination became a reality. We had a variety of cotirses to take this year, included were Development, Math, Science, Reading, English, Experimental Theater, and PE. Sounds like quite a lot, doesn’t it? That’s alright though, because along with that comes an abundance of entertainment. We managed to take two trips, one to Morehead Beach and the other to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Details will be given about the trips in the contents of the paper. We had a variety of sports; volleyball, basketball, tennis, and swimming. The dances and parties were unmentionably great! After a hard day of work and hard play, we sat down to watch television, play card games, and to gossip a bit. We also got to see some educational films. I’d like to express the social life. The parents should be particularly interested in this. Even though we met during the fall, everybody reaUy revealed themselves during the summer. We hope you didn’t get upset about your sons and daughters because strangely enough, they all lived together as a big family. There wasn’t too much antagony. A lot of the girls were discussing how their parents thought they stayed out till late hours of the night. Here’s something to ease that tension. The curfew for the non-bridge students was 11 o’clock P.M. Sunday through Thursday. It was extended to 12 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages or drugs were allowed. Students who violated any rules were punished. We didn’t have much of that though. The rules were extremely appropriate. Just to make sure that every student was responsible, we were contracted each week. I could never forgive myself if I didn’t mention the film we saw entitled. The Learning Tree. The film touched everyone deeply. The whole film was centered around crime in a little town between the blacks and the whites. The film started with a group of black teenage boys stealing apples. The whiteman who owned the orchard chased and whipped one of the boys. The boy took the whip and began whipping the man. The boy was sent to a reform school, for six months, and the man was hospitalized. Meanwhile, in the woods were a group of men shooting dice. When the sheriff arrived everyone scattered. One black man got shot in the back. While a white boy raped a black girl and nothing was said. The main character of the film had to do a lot of growing up, to mature and face some responsibilities. The film was heartbreaking but it caused a greater understanding of ourselves and our friends. Well I guess it’s about time to conclude this. I would like to present a special “see ya next fall to that aggrevating Charlie Rogers, and all the Tutors, and not to leave out Daisey 2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate?” Upward Bound! We wish to encourage new students next year. The whole program would like to express their deep regrets for the leaving of our dedicated secretary, but she will return. Remember Mary Mann we really appreciate you. So for now the Upward Bound F*rogram has come to a close, but next year I know it will be better for it always is. 4,
