THORP Here is a poem written in 1969 by Susan, a former Upward Bound student from Kentucky: “Just a plain ordinary soul, that’s me A child in some ways and g^own-up in others. I love to live and yet I hate life. Oh, will I ever be discovered?” Upward Bound was started so that Susan and thousands of others would be discovered. It was started so that not only would they love to live but would also love life. This summer of 1974 has been a summer of rediscovery for me. Every summer, I redis cover that this summer’s Upward Bound group is, after all, the very best group we have ever had; the tutors are the best ever, and so are the teachers. I rediscover that fine “rap” that comes only when people are together moving toward a common goal. I love Upward Bound and that means I love every one of you, because Upward Bound, what it is—is you. CLEMMON WOODARD QUAY JONES PEGGY DANCY - Upward Bound ’73 In Review It is difficult to sum up in a few paragraphs what a summer in Upward Bound is like. It’s a totally new learning experience that’s fun and enjoyable, and it seems with each new year the students, tutors, and staff members get better and better. Well, the summer of ’73 was no different in that respect. As I am writing this article and looking at last year’s photograph, I can’t help feeling a bit nostalgic in remembering all the happenings of last summer. The group photo graph seems to be quite sym bolic of last summer because it radiates warmth and happi ness. Our summer started off with registration—new and old faces wandering in with their families. There was a bit of confusion that day with people moving into the dorms and all the students meeting each other and the tutors. Nervous smiles and giggles. As we settled into the routine of classes and dorm life, a relaxed atmosphere began to prevail among students and staff. We took our first trip the first week of the program. It was to Atlantic Beach, N. C. We spent the day at the Fort Macon State Park beach and the main beach. As supper iime neared, we stopped and ate at Sanitary Seafood Restaurant in Morehead. JOANIE SPEIGHT I (mm CLYDE CASH Performance Set Tonight By JACKIE KAALUND It is quite reassuring to know that all people are not normal or hum-drum. There are ex ceptions. Such is the case of Sarah, John, Mark, Suzanne, Evelyn, James, Leroy, Bar bara, Phyllis, Chris, and: Shirley. These “plain folk” have woven an intricate web of mystery, sex, violence, heart aches, and happiness to entice and entertain the audience. Nowhere is there such a CON GLOMERATE blend of trage dy and comedy, happiness and dispair, vice and versa. The plot unfolds (or does it?) with Sarah and John, soon to be married. But John is unaware of Sarah’s romance with his cousin, Mark. In addition, Mark is in the hospital fighting for his life and loves Suzanne, his nurse who gives him lots of massages. At the same time Suzanne’s mother, Evelyn is dating John. John’s sister, a nun is Sister Katherine, who is heavy with child by Suzanne’s father, James Carpenter. And then there is Bad Leroy Brown, Sarah’s brother, who is having an affair with Mark’s ex-wife, Barbara. Only, Barbara loves Phyllis, John’s mother. Phyllis has two things going for her: she has a social disease and a retarded son named Chris. Chris violates his nurse Shirley at the funny farm. But keep in mind that he didn’t know what he was doing because it was his animal instincts showing. The epilogue reveals the startling endings of each of the characters. Sarah and John get married. Mark and his hernia die. Suzanne goes to the White House to doctor the tapes by getting her “massage” on the tapes. Evelyn stops seeing John and joins Sister Kathe rine’s convent, while Sister Katherine kicks the “habit” and gets an exorcism in Chicago. Bad Leroy has a fatal heart attack and Barbara continues to worship Phyllis. James cures Phyllis’ social disease and they begin to see stars in each others eyes. Chris goes to Sweden for a sex operation and discovers that he is actually a dog. Finally Shirley forgives Chris for his violation, pays his fine, and rescues him from the dog pound.
