Howard Young MEET YOUR SUPERVISOR On Septem ber 27, 1927, a young man came to Adams-Millis in Kernersville as a knitter from another hosiery plant in Kerners ville . He had been knitting after school and during the summer. One of the immediate problems faced by the eighteen-year- old was that he had just started on his new job and could not risk asking for time off to go to the Forsyth County Fair. He missed the fair due to having to work on the second shift and he has missed several other fairs since, but he has been doing better than a fair job. Howard Young knitted for three years and was promoted to fixing. 'In 1937, he was elevated to floor man, or head fixer. Two years later, he was named assistant superintendent upon the retirement of M. W. Tucker in 1958. A year later, the superin tendent, C. B. Tucker, resigned to accept another position. Howard Young, in 1959, was named superin tendent to succeed Tucker. Howard was born in Rockingham County where his father was a farmer and taught school for twenty years. The Young family moved to Kerners ville when Howard was thirteen, and he attended Kernersville schools. His father was a meat cutter in Kern ersville prior to his retirement. Mrs. Howard Young is the former Mattie Corum of Kernersville . She was formerly employed in Plant #4as a looper. They have one son, Jack, who is with the Southern Chemical Company in Greensboro. Howard Young is active in the civic and community affairs in Kernersville. A member of the First Baptist Church, he has served on the Building Committee for their new church. He is secretary of his Sun day School Class. He is also a mem ber of the Woodmen of the World and The Exchange Club of Kernersville. Despite his busy schedule at the plant and his participation in civic affairs, Howard finds time to look after his small farm near Kerners ville where he has several head of cattle. His hobbies include fishing and hunting. He can match fishing stories with most fishermen, and he keeps a pack of well-trained Beagles for rabbit hunting. Clayton Fogleman, fixer. Plant #6, is the recipient of a suggestion award for an improved tension control device on the KN machines. Making the presentation is W. L. Voncannon, superintendent of the ladies' hosiery division. - 4 -
