BIG GOVERNMENT t Have you noticed that little touch o' fall in the air in the early mornin' ? And it's even beginnin' to look a wee bit fallish outside, too--and cool enough that a beef roast sounds good, don't you think? Kate Chapman, of the Finishing Department of Plant #7, has sent us the best recipe for one that you ever sunk a tooth in. Yep, there is more than one way to cook a beef roast. Roast Beef 3 Lb. beef roast (shoulder roast is best) 1 Pkg. Lip ton onion soup 1 Can mushroom soup Tear two long sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil and place together. Place meat on foil and cover with dry onion soup. Then, pour undiluted mushroom soup over the meat and onion mixture. Wrap securely with foil and bake at 350° for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It has been calculated that if the number of federal employees contin ues to grow at the present rate, every one will be working for the government by 2058. Maurice H. Stans, former director of the budget, notes that to day the federal government: (1) Taxes and spends over $90 billion a year. This is $1 out of every $6 in goods and services produced in the United States. (2) Employs around 2. 5 million civilians and around 2. 8 million mili tary personnel. That's about 1 out of every 13 people employed in the U. S. (3) Owns 767, 766, 435. 5 acres of land. This is one out of every 3 acres in the U. S. (4) Owns 421,360 buildings with nearly 2. 5 billion square feet of floor space. It also leases 96,381, 000 square feet of building space and near ly 1, 676, 000 acres of land in the U. S. (5) Has $15 billion of farm com modities and stockpiled strategic materials. (6) Owns $122 billion of military weapons, equipment and supplies. (7) Has loaned.$24 billion to veterans, home owners, businesses, farmers, foreign countries andothers. All of this makes Uncle Sam the free world's biggest spender, lender, borrower, employer, property owner, tenant and insurer. Delicious ! ! Thanks, Kate. See you here next month. 'Bye for now. When I was young, I was amazed at Plutarch's statement that the elder Cato began at the age of eighty to learn Greek. I am amazed no longer. Old age is ready to undertake tasks that youth shirked because they would take too long. --W. Somerset Maugham - 14 - SOFTBALL TEAM HONORED The Adams-Millis softball team were guests at the Adams-Millis Fore men's Club for an afternoon of fishing and Swimming on August 25.
