Scholarship is a part of man's evolution. The accumulation of knowledge, however, is of little value itself. It must be regarded as no more than a means to an end. The true end of all learning, of all scholarship, is not merely to know, but to understand. The proper aim of every student, whether youth or graybeard, teenager or mature man, is not just to be learned, but to be wise. And wis dom does not come from scholarship as such but from the application of intelligence to the knowledge obtained. A bore is that way because he talks about himself. A gossip is that way because he talks about others. A brilliant conversationalist is that way be cause he talks about me. Michael Beck graduated from Ragsdale High School.
