Social Security Increases
Effective January 1, 1982, the
social security tax (FICA) went
from 6.65% of wages to 6.70% of
wages and the wage base max
imum increased from $29,700 to
$32,400. If your earnings are
$10,000 a year, for example, you
will pay $5.00 more in social
security taxes than you did in
1981. That’s about 10* more a
week. Adams-Millis will, of
course, match dollar for dollar
the social security taxes you pay.
Also this year, you can work
and earn more without losing
social security benefits. If you
are now under age 65, you may
earn $4,440 without losing
benefits. (Last year’s maximum
was $4,080.) If you are between
the ages of 65 and 72, your max
imum without loss of benefits is
$6,000 in 1982 (as opposed to $5,500
in 1981). Beneficiaries who are
age 72 and over may earn any
amount without losing benefits.
The year 1982 also will see
changes in Medicare coverages.
The hospital deductible increases
from $204 in 1981 to $260 in 1982,
and the annual doctor’s deducti
ble amount increases from $60 in
1981 to $75 in 1982. The
“deductible” amount is the cost
of covered services in each
benefit period not covered by
Medicare.
If you have questions concern
ing your social security or
Medicare coverage, contact your
personnel manager or your Icoal
social security office.
(Remember, too, to call or visit
your social security office at least
three months before you plan to
retire.)
