We recently had opportunity to
hear a young Belgian exchange
student discuss his observations of
this country during his visit of the
past year. Before coming to the
United States under the auspices
of the American Field Service he
had an entirely wrong conception
of many things in our country
gained from movies, newspapers
and some books he had read. This
unfortunate impression changed as
time went on.
At first he was struck by the
cordiality and optimism of our
people, even though we were en
gaged in a difficult and often un
comprehended undeclared w a r.
These qualities along with our peo
ple’s confidence in each other,
their faith in their ability to care
for themselves and their strong
hope in the future, he felt, contri
bute to the strength of this
country.
He said all Europeans are
struck by the great number of
friends (hey can make in a short
lapse of time after arriving in
America. The European at home
has a small circle of friends with
whom he stays in close relation
ship. It is hard to form a new
circle or group of friends in the
old countries as the old traditional
factors are still alive, of class and
religious distinction.
The American way, he found,
has leveled and smoothed some of
the obstacles which continue to
hamper human relationships in the
old world.
This young Belgian discovered
in America our hearts beat in uni
son for the defense of democracy
and the preservation of the ideals
inherited from our constitution. He

Not Powers Models, But Still Very Pretty
ANVII, HUANI) STYLE — These aren't I’owers models, but mem
bers of our own family modeling Anvil Brand’s popular ladies’
shorts and slacks. Lavinia Kersey, at left, is attired in a pair of
white shorts which were introduced as a new number last year.
First quarter sales of shorts this year more than doubled sales for
the first quarter last year, while sales for (he second quarter which
will not be over un(il the end of .lune, already have more than tripled
sales for the same period last year. Lavinia is a member of the
utility department, which produces (he shor(s and also the slacks,
worn by Margaret Becker, right, receptionist at (he Hudson division.
Women’s slacks are a new number this year. The pair worn by Mar
garet, betler known as ‘•Tu(u,” are of fireman’s red, and it’s a pity
this picture can’t be shown in color. With her slacks Tutu wears a
plaid shirt with green predominating, while Lavinia’s shirt has red
predominating. Both are our own Tom Long Sportswear shirts,
intended for youths, but proving equally popular with Anvil Brand
women for wear with skirts as well as shorts and slacks.
As Holiday
The annual summer holiday be
gins a week from today, on June
27 when all the plants will close
after work that day until Monday
morning, July 7. Memorial Day
also was observed as a holiday
May 30.
Vacation plans already have
been made for beach trips, moun
tain trips, staying at home, or
visits to friends or relatives.
Herewith are a few vacation tips
that are being widely circulated
in an effort to help you have a
good vacation:
If you are going on a motor
trip, don’t start at the end of the
day when you are tired and your
reflexes are slowed down. When
you do drive, break the monotony
by a stop every two hours when
you can get out and stretch your
legs. Also remember that the place
to which you are going will stay
there — the question is, if you go
too fast, will you get there, in one
piece ?
If you are going to the beach,
do have someone with you when
you go into the water, and use
beaches where there are life
guards if it is possible. Also re
member that too much sun on the
first day of your vacation can spoil
the rest of it, or even put you to
bed for the remainder of the time.
For mountain vacationers, cork
screw roads and sheer drops down
the mountainside coming and go
ing are the biggest hazards, while
for stay-at-homes the best advice
offered is — do what you have to
do early in the day and then relax.
You’ll feel and be the better for
doing so.
