The Anvil Brand basketball team hasn’t lost a game yet. So far our boys have l)eateu (Jlobs Parlor Furniture Company, Marsh Furniture Company, and the Adams-Millis and Myrtle Desk teams. As Sew It Seams prepared to go to press they were all set to tackle Highland Cotton Mill. Right now Sew It Seams apolo gizes to Dwig-ht Craun for letting his name get dropped out of the cutlines under the team’s picture last month. But everyone knew the good looking guy between Jerry Paschal and Joel Paul was “Ike,” so why worry? Why Santa Claus? The name of Santa Claus for the patron saint of Christmas comes from a German-Dutch corruption of the name of Saint Nicholas. Legend has it that this good saint lived in the fourth century. He learned that three young wom en were without suitors because their father was too poor to pro vide a dowry. St. Nick tossed three bags of gold into their room one night, and they all lived happily ever after. “San Niklaus” of the Germans became “Sinteklass” of the Dutch, and those who settled New York wound up with “Santa C'aus.” Drivers Affected By New Stale Law Do you drive an automobile? If you do, take heed! A new law which becomes effective on Jan uary 1 affects you. It requires that you be able to prove financial re sponsibility within 60 days after becoming involved in an accident— and it makes no difference whether or not the accident was your fault. Obviously, the easiest way to prove financial responsibility is through liability insurance, either of you as the driver or of the auto mobile which you are driving. You must have a minimum coverage of $5,000 for injury to one person; $10,000 for injury to two or more persons; and $1,000 for property damage. If the automobile you are driv ing is insured, even though you are not the owner, every thing is all right as long as you have the owner’s permission to drive it. Without liability insurance, on either the vehicle or yourself as a driver, the only other means of proving financial reliability, ac cording to the ne^ law, is to post a bond ; p to, Of' make a de posit \/t CP. h"'^^^Vui'ities in the same amou After Jail 'y 1 the d|^r of every motor vehicle involveiT in an accident, regardless of fault, must within 24 hours file a written re port with the Department of Motor Vehicles in Raleigh. It’s suggested that you carry a form in your auto mobile at all times. If you are in sured you may notify your agent^ FORMAL WEDDING — Rose Marie Hutchins, who sews zippers in ladies dungaree, was married in a formal ceremony at Pinegrove Baptist Church on October 30. She is now Mrs. Donald Kidd and re sides on Route 3. Her husband is employed by Burlington Mills in this city. and the responsibility of filing this report becomes his. You also are required to notify local police, if the accident is in town, or the State Highway Patrol if the accident happens outside the city limits. The “teeth” in the new law is the fact that if proof of financial responsibility is not made within 60 days, the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles is required to suspend your driving license. In such an event, the license remains sus pended until you have either met responsibility requirements or one year has passed without the “other party” having filed a claim for damages. The taking away of your driving license is automatic unless your automobile, or the one you are driving, is the only one involved and no property damage is done to anything except this particular ve hicle; your car was legally parketl and someone ran into it; someone without permission from you was driving your car at the time of the accident; or unless you and the “other party” have agreed on a “proper” settlement of any dam ages resulting from the accident. And your insurance rate may depend upon your carefulness as a driver. After an accident those per sons who do not have proper in surance, and cannot otherwise prove financial responsibility, will have to apply for insurance cover age. If they can’t get it, their driv ing licenses remain revoked. There is to be an assigned “risk pool” in the state which will as sign bad risks to an insurance company after the applicant has not been able to get insurance through noimal channels. Prem iums for the insurance, in such in stances, may cost up to twice as much as^ usual. But the Commis sioner of Insurance in many cases will allow the pool to refuse ac ceptance of the bad risks. That would bar them from driving per manently. Backers of the new law’ believe it will eventually force the bad drivers off the roads—making our high ways a lot safer for the average driver. DOWN THE ( HIMNEV Why does Santa Claus c o ni e down the chimney — at least on greeting cards and in the ads ? The myth which old-time Englishmen favored was that Santa was there by cleaning the chimney of soot, to allow good luck to enter the house at the New Year. THE NAME Our name for the day, Christ mas, dates back to the 11th cen tury when it was called Cristes Maesse—literally, Christ Mass.
