Nearly 105 million persons had voluntary health insurance against hospitalization expenses, as of mid-1955, according to an estimate by the Health Insurance Council. Insurance companies provide hospital expense protec tion for more than half of the total number of persons with this form of protection. There are nearly 7,000 hospi tals in the nation, according to the AHA. Of these, some 4,700 are “voluntary” or non govern mental hospitals.
