By JOYCE NEWKIRK DID YOU KNOW STUDENTS, that it is more important than most of us realize to act more responsibly in nom inating and electing our fellow students to office? I ask this question desiring that each of us will re-examine our mode for choosing and electing new ofl5- cers during campus elections. Let’s think back, now, and ask ourselves the following ques tions: Am I guilty of lack of concern as to how our officers are chosen? Do I fail to register? Do I permit others to persuade me to vote for someone in order to elevate his social position, or to enhance the prestige of an organization to which' he be longs? Frazier is now manager of this firm. minor incidents above, then we should immediately resolve to do something about the ways in which we use, or rather abuse our privileges. ^ The offices of our major or ganizations, such as, the Student Government and the Campus Echo, are managerial positions and require a great amount of time, effort, and most of all know-how. Therefore, it isn’t fair to the members of an organi zation for students to choose blindly leaders "who do not have the required time, effort, and know-how in executing the du ties of his office. On the other hand, it isn’t fair to the elected student who lacks administrative know-how, be cause, in addition to carrying out the duties of his office, he is also expected to maintain a necessary academic average. Needless to say, one or maybe both obligations will stirely lag. STUDENTS, here is an area in which we can take advantage of our “student self-direction,” and let’s not permit it to go by imnoticed. Let us resolve to take an active part in campus elec tions by registering and learn ing as much as possible about the qualifications of our candi dates for office. And finally, let us employ our moral and in tellectual stamina and cast an intelligent vote for the most qualified candidate. King took part in a program on “Thei Improvement of Preparation Programs in Educational Ad ministration” at the University of North Carolina earlier this month. Dr. Browne was on a panel discussing “What can thej Col-- leges and Universities Do to Ad vance Educational Administra tion.” Dr. King was on a panel discussing “Better Preparation of Administrators, Pre- and Post-Degree Needs.” Professor John V. Turner was among noted commerce and bus iness experts serving as consul tants for a recenf Business Workshop sponsored by Miles, College, Birmingham, Alabama. “Problems in Business Educa tion” was the subject Professor Turner addressed the Workshop on. He also taught a model shorthand class. Dr. Helen G. Edmonds deliv-> ered a speech at the University of North Carolina Library in February on “The Negro in Poli itics.” Dr. Edmonds was also Foimd- er’s Day speaker for DeJLta Sig ma Theta Sorority chapters ini Durham, Charlotte, Florence and Greefnville, South Carolinai during the past month.
