Eagles Exterminate Yellow jackets Eagles Lose To Morris Brown
By John A. Holley
Ike Gatling, North Carolina
College senior quarterback, led
the Eagles to a 28-6 victory over
Allen University here on rain
drenched O’Kelly Field Satur
day afternoon.
It was really a big day for the
beanpole Newport News, Va.,
triple threater who tossed scor
ing TD’s of 11 and 22 yards to
backs Rossie Barfield and Pete
Hayes; and tallied two extra
points on a heave to end Paul
Winslow.
Gatling also was on' the re
ceiving end of an extra point
tally from Captain Lloyd Eason.
After putting the spark to the
Eagles midway the first quarter
when the locals racked up 12
points, Gatling gained 45 yards
in a 52 yard drive climaxed
when Barfield roared over from
the four in the second quarter.
The Eagles’ heroic line played
superlative ball all afternoon,
with Jim Brewington, Jim
Forbes, Luther Gerald, Bobby
Johnson, Paul Winslow, George
Wallace, Charlie Hinton, and
Bob McAdam turning in sterling
performances.
A1 Peace recovered Yellow-
jacket Nat Ray’s fumble on the
Allen 26 to set up NCC’s final
tally for the day. Gatling ran 26
yards and Eason jogged 11 more.
Four plays later Gatling crashed
•ver from the two on a heep
play.
Eugene Johnson, the day’s top
ground, gainer, 64 yards in 13
carries, tallied the visitors’ lone
tally in the last two minutes. He
bulled over from the three to cap
a 47 yard sustained drive.
Jim Hogan’s try for the extra
point via a pass to Nat Boston
was batted down by NCC’s Hazel
Freeman, frosh fullback from
Charlotte.
In the extra point department
for NCC, the Eagles trying for
two pointers via passes didn’t
connect in the first period. How
ever, in the third period, Gatling
tallied on a keep PAT try. And
in, the fourth quarter, Gatling
connected with end Paul Wins
low for the conversion.
Gatling, the big star in the
NCC show, completed five of
eight passes for 91 yards. His
first five heaves unerringly
found their receivers.
On the ground, the NCC field
general rushed for 46 yards in
four carries for an average of
11.5 per try.
Thomas (Speedy) Johnson
picked up 29 yards in six carries
and Barfield gained 20 yards in
five carries.
NCC piled up 15 first downs
to Allen’s 9. The Yellowjackets,
however, outrushed the Eagles
139 to 131 yards. NCC aerial
yardage of 101 to none for the
visitors was the difference in
the ball game.
Eagle throwers completed five
of 11 passes with two heaves in
tercepted. ‘Jacket tossers were

average and Allen kicked five
times for 34.4.
Showers poured down on the
field intermittently during the
game.
The Eagles recovered four of
their five fumbles while the
Jackets recovered only one of
their seven bobbles.
The Eagles were penalized
total of 60 yards against 30 for
the visitors.

A revengeful and veteran
Morris Brown Purple Wolverine
football team, out to settle with
North Carolina College for the
licking they took at the claws
of the Eagles last season, spank
ed at NCC gridders 24-6 in
Herndon Stadium.
The Wolverines with their en
tire team intact from the previ
ous season, took to the air and
scored three touchdowns to clip
the wings of the game, but in
experienced Eagles.
The Herm Riddick-coached
club fought valiantly throughout
the game, and threatened on
three occasions to cross the goal
line first, but a fumble once,
and the hard Wolverine line
kept them from reaching pay
dirt in the first half.
Morris Brown got the first
break and the first score of the
fracas when Walt Browninir>
NCC’s punter took a bad snap
from the center. Unable to get
off his punt, Browning elected
to run the ball from the end
zone. But before he could cross
the goal line, Lambert Reed,
MB’s All-American tackle,
thumped him for a two-point
safety, giving E. J. “Ox” Clem
mons’ ballclub a 2-0 halftime
lead.
Morris Brown’s secret weapon,
Andy Pinkney, loosened up hisi
arm in the second half and real
