Eagles Exterminate Yellow jackets Eagles Lose To Morris Brown By John A. Holley Ike Gatling, North Carolina College senior quarterback, led the Eagles to a 28-6 victory over Allen University here on rain drenched O’Kelly Field Satur day afternoon. It was really a big day for the beanpole Newport News, Va., triple threater who tossed scor ing TD’s of 11 and 22 yards to backs Rossie Barfield and Pete Hayes; and tallied two extra points on a heave to end Paul Winslow. Gatling also was on' the re ceiving end of an extra point tally from Captain Lloyd Eason. After putting the spark to the Eagles midway the first quarter when the locals racked up 12 points, Gatling gained 45 yards in a 52 yard drive climaxed when Barfield roared over from the four in the second quarter. The Eagles’ heroic line played superlative ball all afternoon, with Jim Brewington, Jim Forbes, Luther Gerald, Bobby Johnson, Paul Winslow, George Wallace, Charlie Hinton, and Bob McAdam turning in sterling performances. A1 Peace recovered Yellow- jacket Nat Ray’s fumble on the Allen 26 to set up NCC’s final tally for the day. Gatling ran 26 yards and Eason jogged 11 more. Four plays later Gatling crashed •ver from the two on a heep play. Eugene Johnson, the day’s top ground, gainer, 64 yards in 13 carries, tallied the visitors’ lone tally in the last two minutes. He bulled over from the three to cap a 47 yard sustained drive. Jim Hogan’s try for the extra point via a pass to Nat Boston was batted down by NCC’s Hazel Freeman, frosh fullback from Charlotte. In the extra point department for NCC, the Eagles trying for two pointers via passes didn’t connect in the first period. How ever, in the third period, Gatling tallied on a keep PAT try. And in, the fourth quarter, Gatling connected with end Paul Wins low for the conversion. Gatling, the big star in the NCC show, completed five of eight passes for 91 yards. His first five heaves unerringly found their receivers. On the ground, the NCC field general rushed for 46 yards in four carries for an average of 11.5 per try. Thomas (Speedy) Johnson picked up 29 yards in six carries and Barfield gained 20 yards in five carries. NCC piled up 15 first downs to Allen’s 9. The Yellowjackets, however, outrushed the Eagles 139 to 131 yards. NCC aerial yardage of 101 to none for the visitors was the difference in the ball game. Showers poured down on the field intermittently during the game. The Eagles recovered four of their five fumbles while the Jackets recovered only one of their seven bobbles. The Eagles were penalized total of 60 yards against 30 for the visitors. NCC opens Cl A A play on Oct. 4 in Baltimore. At Atlanta on Sept. 20, the NCC eleven drop- 24-6. By John Holley A revengeful and veteran Morris Brown Purple Wolverine football team, out to settle with North Carolina College for the licking they took at the claws of the Eagles last season, spank ed at NCC gridders 24-6 in Herndon Stadium. The Wolverines with their en tire team intact from the previ ous season, took to the air and scored three touchdowns to clip the wings of the game, but in experienced Eagles. The Herm Riddick-coached club fought valiantly throughout the game, and threatened on three occasions to cross the goal line first, but a fumble once, and the hard Wolverine line kept them from reaching pay dirt in the first half. Morris Brown got the first break and the first score of the fracas when Walt Browninir> NCC’s punter took a bad snap from the center. Unable to get off his punt, Browning elected to run the ball from the end zone. But before he could cross the goal line, Lambert Reed, MB’s All-American tackle, thumped him for a two-point safety, giving E. J. “Ox” Clem mons’ ballclub a 2-0 halftime lead.
