SENIOR OF THE MONTH
Freddy, The Poet, Gives Advice
Poets Corner
By Zack Davis
EDITOR’S NOTE
Zack Davis, one of NCC’s out
standing: tennis players, wrote
several poems which he entered
in the College Language Associ
ation Poetry Contest during the
past semester. Although he
failed to win, the Campus Echo
thought a couple of them were
worthy of publication.
“On Ignorartce”
As the crowds of people appear;
And gather with a harsh tone,
I stop to listen and stare,
But soon my thoughts are alone.
The people thought wise at sight*
The group entirely weak a#
words,
Are actually ignorant of light
As told when teach voice is
heard.
How does ignorance take thee
hold
To never let one freely go?
Why is ignorance so bold
To hold a people forever more?
Cahst not a people break free
To search for wisdom’s field?
Canst not a people go from thee
And cast you aside for wiser
yield?
Of course with stronger fight
You would give them loose;
You, who are weak at might
And soon but sign a truce.
Then soon you will be gone,
Never to touch their minds
again;
As fast as you were born.
And never to smile over this
win.
But if they with you remain.
And never cast blindness to the
wind.
For they will always be the
same;
To forget wisdom as their
friend.
Then you will have won the
battle.
Though long as it may be.
Then people will be like cattle,
Ignorant, blind, and never free.
“SPEAK”
One says. Speak you not to the
the one going above?
And I say, Speak? No, for I do
not know how.
For you see my heart is heavy
for a lost love
And speech eludes my tongue as
of now.
For I must go on, yes go on,
and pass her by;
And never, no never take a
second glance.
Because I might, I just might
recall why,
The love of that one, I no longer
enhance.
For it was only a flight or so ago
That we did quickly and sorrow-*
fully depart.
And I dare not, no, dare not
look anymore.
Or least, I’ll destroy my mind
and heart.
And that is why she keeps go
ing on,
And that is why I’ll always walk
and walk;
Yes, that is why my love has
gone,
And so now you know—I dare
not talk.

day evening May 15, in the B. N.
Duke Auditorium. She was
featured at the piano.
Miss Bethel, who is the lead-t

choice of musical selections. The
program read as follows; “Ich
