Colson, Hinton, Martin Sliine In Intramural Track Meet Trackmen Place 4tti In Tourney The Eagles’ tracksters gained only 16 points for fourth place in the 39th CIAA Annual Track and Field Championship, May 13-14, at Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. The 440-yard dash by Walter Johnson and the 220-yard dash by Vance Robinson were th^ only first-place honors that the Eagles took in the event. Vance Robinson fell behind Paul Win-i der of Morgan State for second place in the 100-yard dash, with Winder running the heat in 9.5 seconds. Morgan State was in the spot light during this meet. The Bears took 6 first-place honors breaking two of their own re cords; the Sprint Medley Relay in 3:22.5 to top the old one of 3:25.4 set in 1950, and the 880- yard dash in 1:52.8 to better the 1950 mark of 1:53.9. Other first places received .'by the Bears were in the high jump, executed by David Morris, who jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, 220-yard Low Hurdles by Lawson Smart who was clocked at 23.8, the 440 yard High Hurdles, also by Smart, in 52.5., and the Mile Relay with a time of 3:11.8 tq top the Eagles who finished in second place. In team scoring Morgart finished in first place with 58 points, Winston-Salem, 53 and one-half; Maryland State, 43; North Carolina College, 16; Delaware State, 11; Hampton, 5; Virginia State, 5; North Caro lina A&T, 3; and Howard Uni versity, 2 and one-half. North Carolina College Ten nis Team lost its first conference, match in over three years on May 12th in the 37th CIAA Con ference Tournament. The Eagles fell below Johnson C. Smith IJniversity, who took first place; honors. Hampton shared the runner-up position with thei Eagles. In the first round, Napoleon Horton (NCC) lost to Eugene Dovon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, Maurice Handy (NCC) won over Edward Taylor of Va, Union, 6-3, 6-4. Johnson C. Smith won both of their matches. By Chester Mallory The Junior Class’ sparkling track team showed its power here on O’Kelley’s Field, May 17 in the annual intramural meet. The heated juniors bagged up 49 points for the intramural championship while the Sopho mores and the Seniors tied for second place with 27 points each. The Freshman Class did not enter the meet. The dominating Juniors placed in every event. Rossie Barfield and James Colson were probably the most outstanding performers of the meet, with each cinderman winning two In the quarter finals, Handy won over James Stroud of Hampton 6-1, 10-8. In the semi- finals Johnson (Smith) over powered Maurice Handy 8-6, 6-2. The finals saw Eugene Dovon, Hampton, clip Denton Johnson for the CIAA singles champion ship in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The doubles event went to Handy who downed Gordon and Brown (Va. Union) in the first round, Ceasar and McCoy; (Morgan) 6-0, 6-1, in the quar ter finals, and Johnson and Williams (J. C. Smith). firsts. Barfield won the 100-yard dash in 10.2, and the 220-yard dash in 23.5. Colson, represent ing the Seniors, won the mile in 5:24.4 and the 880-yard in 23.5. Following Barfield in the 100- yard dash were Emmanuel Crockett, Jeffrey Williams, and Isaac Gatling. In the 220-yard dash Jamea “Duke” Martin came in second to Barfield, while Ike Gatling followed Martin for third place. Following Colson in the mile run was William Brandon. Col son was tailed by Donald Stokes and William Stroy in the 880- yard run. George Pressley gal loped away in the 440-yard dash; with a time of 55.1, followed by Clark Witherspoon and Richard Mapp. The Junior Relay Team com prised of Harvey Ramseur, James Bryant, Roy Greenland, and Ellis Smith running anchor, came in first in the 440-yard relay, and also in the 880- yard relay; the third-year boys were clocked 46.5 in the 440-yard re lay, and 2:38.4 in the 880-yard relay. The Sophomore Class led the scoring in the field event. James Johnson C. Smith led with 12 points, NCC and Hampton tied with 10 points each, and Mor gan State finished with 6 points. “Duke” Martin and Charles “Bobo” Hinton placed first twice. Martin leaped 22 feet for first place in the broad jump^ The high jump event was tied between Martin, Crockett, and Mapp at 5 feet 9 inches. Hinton pushed the shot put 39 feet and won the discus throw at 92 feet 8 inches. The most exciting event of the track extravaganza was the 100- yard dash between some big men of the football squad, Charles “Bobo” Hinton, Jame® “Slim” Williams, and Arthur “Big Daddy” Grier. Hinton took the events, followed by Williams and Grier. Alphas (Continued from Page 4) The fraternity will crown Miss Lyons in a ceremony late in October or early November. She will at that time become sweetheart, succeeding Miss Ida Stephens. The Sphinx Club, the pledge club of Alpha Phi Alpha, ir» a separate meeting also elected their officers. The new officers are: Richard Fikes, president; Charles Barber, vice president; Johnny Blackwell, secretary; Donald Ensley, treasurer; and Bruce Speight, parliamentarian. Smith Drops HCC In First Net Loss Of '60 Season The Eagles’ racketeers lost their first match in three years, Friday, May 6 to Johnson C. Smith of Charlotte, 7-1, break ing a string of 35 consecutive doubles victories the Eagles had compiled over the period. Napoleon Horton won tha only match of the day for the Eagles when he overpowered Baron Stroud in three sets. Top seeded Maurice Handy and number 2 ranking Zack Davis lost to Smith’s key men, Denton Johnson and Drew Williams. Johnson took the singles match with Handy, 7-5, 2-6- 6-3 to avenge a defeat Handy had won over the Detroit freshman earlier in the season. Zack Davis, a finalist in the ‘59 CIAA Tournament, lost to Williams of Smith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Summary; David Porter (Smith) D Emmett Martin (NCC) 6-2, 6-3. The play was directed by Miss Mary Bohanon, Chairman of the Drama Department, and the set was designed by Mr. Terry Wells.
