On August 24, for example, the “briefing notes” included the following summary; “The Task Group, including U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON, this morning continues antl-subma’ rine warfare exercises with, three conventionally powered submarines and the nuclear-^ powered submarine SKIPJACK. The exercise is called ASWEX Free Play. Last night at 9:35 P.M., the NORTHAMPTON re ported a ‘green flare’ off the starboard quarter at a range of 2,000 yards. The submarine claims a successful attack on the ship. ASW exercises con tinue today. “Ships have made five pos sible submarine contacts during the last 24 hours. These con tacts are designated as ‘goblins’. Goblins ‘C’ was the submarina which claims a j^ORTH- AMPTON ‘hit’. One of these contacts was made by an ASW aircraft from the support air craft carrier U.S.S. ESSEX, followed by a simulated attack on the submarine.” The extremely realistic exer cises included air strikes, anti air warfare and anti-submarine warfare exercises. Approxi mately 50 ships participated. Ships were constantly stalked by submarines, and anti-subma- Kine warfare techniques were used against them by day and night. Dr. Elder described th^ entire experience as “complete ly fascinating and absorbing.” The maneuvers witnessed by the President and other mem bers of his party were prelimi nary to Exercise Swordthrust, a North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion Operation scheduled for this month. This exercise will involve 50 combat ships from six nations, the U.S.A., Great Britain, France, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Vice Admiral Harold T. Deutermann, who with Captain Harold G.
