Monday, November 28, 1960 THE CAMPUS ECHO Page Three Opinions of Campus Eclio Readers SG Blasted Dear Miss Jarman: As an interested student, I am greatly concerned about the student body and the operationsi of their student government. I think that the students have dangerously goofed in the selec tion of a student government! president. A preview of what was in store for them was shownj last May when Mr. Lacy Street er gave his inauguration ad dress. On this occasion the presi dent-elect re-defined inaugural) address by reading newspaper clipping on developments in the sit-in movement in New York, Mass., and other far-off places. This is Ai^hat he gave us instead of stating his aims and aspira tions for the student body. Please be advised he has none. At the present the SG has done nothing. Thanks for this goes undivided to Mr. Streeter. When the SG was to send re presentatives to the Interim Council meeting at Duke Sun day (Nov. 13, 1960), it did not.| Mr. Streeter did not find time to appoint anyone, nor will he let Mr. Charles McNeil, who wa» elected Vice President last year, conduct it for him. At this time he has not appointed anyone (he is thinking about it), nor has he Poet's Nook Death is Eternal Death is eternal; From the fate of Abel, To the end of time. In life as in death are we linked. Death knows no bounds of age; From Methuselah, To the suckling babe. Death is incessant; 'iinowle*!^ inferior • H aagnanimous, Unaer tne mein of disease and accident Irrevocable death vigilantly; comes. From the caprices of nature To the ceaseless meditation of murder. Death is infinite; From the gates of hell. To the portals of paradise Is death’s domain. Death is a necessity of life. From death comes immortal life. Therefore in perpetual life is death. Yes, Death is eternal. Joseph Goodwater arranged for a general campus election, as should be done. Now that a certain dance has been forbidden on campus, against the will of the student body, the SG has again assumed the seat of solitude and inde cision. In this leadership? No, it is gross incompetence. When talent shows were sud denly cancelled, what did the SG president do? Is not the SG to represent the students on matters such as this. There will be no more talent shows nor any thing else .as long as Dean Latham exercises dictatorial powers and no one protests. Si lence then is the theme of the Streeter administration. Even in the field of race re lations, his main and whole in terest, he has done nothing. On occasions students from Duke have invited students from NCCI to come and discuss racial prob lems and perhaps through dis cussion solve some of them. No similar invitation has been ex tended to the Duke University student body. On this, too, he said simply that he has not had time. When students from Duke did come as part of the Fiftietli An niversary Celebration, they were not invited to discuss race relations. But our SG president seemingly did not know this. Here he attacked the students on civil rights, etc. This, however, was not the topic of discussion. Was this a display of leadership? I call it ignorance. Mr. Streeter, who never worked with the SG before and who rode into office on the tail of the sit-in movement, is now{ in utter confusion. From his in^ auguration address, it was ob vious that he had no plans tot a student program, and in less than, two months, he has erased; any and all doubts. Mr. Streeter has no office hours, and seemingly cannot de vote any of his time to the stu dents.'If this is the case, as indi-i cations are, he should, in all due respect to the student body and as an honorable deed, resign, make his non-duties and re sponsibilities official. Surely things could not be worse.
