Page Four CAMPUS ECHO Saturday, September 30, 1967 r F SEVEN FOOT EX NCC GRIDDER RICHARD “TINY” SLIGH Sligh Is Tallest Man In Pro Football Richard Sligh after playing his first professional football game is now the holder of a unique professional football rec ord He is the tallest man ever to play professional football. The Oakland Raiders of the American Football League_ real ized this potential and last year chose Sligh as a high choice in the professional football draft. Sligh progressed rapidly in the Raiders pre-season training camp and will see a lot of action this year at his defensive tackle position. Coaches feel that Sligh can be as good as he wants to be and are expecting great things from him. Richard Sligh was a former biology student here at North Carolina College. A rabbit? 98 two years of outstanding i^ot- ball for the Eagles before giving up the game to concentrate on his studies. In his two years Sligh became a legend in the CIAA. Sligh was often accused oi not being rough enough but he was always a terror when he wanted to be. Sligh was often seen on the field with a smile on his face but when he became rowled most quarterbacks would run their plays to the other side. The Raiders feel that they have solved this problem and every one in the Raiders” camp is ex pecting Sligh to be in content tion for Rookie of the Year hon ors. Sligh at 7 feet is 3 inches tall er than all American Football League Ernie Ladd and he is just as strong. Sligh who wears a size 60 jersey and a I6V2 EEEE shoe says that he hasn’t begun to play rough yet. In the Oakland Raiders first regular league game Sligh en tered the game shortly before half time and he played the rest of the game. Several times he broke through the line to throw the quarterback for a loss. The Raiders defeated the Boston Pa triots 35-7 and Isig Sligh re ceived a standing ovation as he left the field. Just think, we use to call this monster “Tiny”.
