Page Eight THE CAMPUS ECHO Tuesday, October 31, 1967 Track Team Prospects '68 Bright By Reginald Hodges With football season almost over and the basketball team facing a rebuilding year, many faithful Eagle fans have already turned their hopes to track. Bounding with an excess of po tential, this year’s track tesim should be one of the best in the nation. The entire track team which finished first in the South Caro lina invitational, first in the Carolina A.A.U. and second in the C.I.A.A. last year has re turned for another banner year. New head coach George Quiett has inherited the greatest group of ruimers in the history of this school. Among the returning veteran stars are Charles Copeland, sen ior co-captain and sprint spe cialist from Raleigh, N. C. One of two seniors on this year’s team, Copeland has posted times of 9.4 in the hundred yard dash, 20.5 in the 220 yard dash and 46.0 in the quarter mile. Tony Gilmore co-captain, and the other senior on this year’s team also runs the sprints, but spe cializes in the broad jump and triple jumps. Lionel Urgan, a jimior workhorse, has posted times of 9.3 in the 100 yard dash and 47.7 in the quarter mile. Two quarter milers, Floyd Williams and William Baity, are both exceptional runners, both have posted times near 47.0 in their speciality. Other special ists are Leon Sanders and Har ding Kirkley in the hurdles. Sanders could easily be the best hurdler to come through our school since world record hold er and two-time Olympic cham pion Lee Calhoun. Last year Sanders posted the fastest fresh man quarter mile hurdler time in the United States, an imbe- lievable 51.7 sec. We also have two of the best high jumpers in this part of the coimtry returning, James Wil- kerson and Terry Cole. Both men have cleared 6’ 7” and f!ole finished second in the C.I.A.A. championship meet with a jump of 6’ 8”. The relay teams could be made up of any one of many possibilities. The mile relay team last year composed of Ur gan, Baity, Keys, and Copeland not only broke the school rec ord but set a C.I.A.A. record with a blistering 3:09.11. Gil more, Williams, Reed and San ders have all run on champion ship A.A.U. relay teams. ^ach Quiett has also re cruited four outstanding fresh man prospects: Raymond Bul lock a member of the all armed forces track team, Elmer Reed, a middle distance runner, James Stevenson, a quarter miler, and -Sports Review- (Continued from Page 7) Boyd was broken up by defen sive back Ronald Upperman, and the Eagles agaiin had a chance to score. The Eagles advanced to their 33, then fell back to their 24- yard line. A third-down punt by Thurman Jones went to Morgan’s 31-yard line where it was downed. On the first-down play, Mor gan half back John Fuqua ran for 49 yards. Johnson moved the ball to NCC’s 12, then gave to Fuqua, who carried it for seven yards. Half-back George Nock went to the four, and Fuqua carried again for the touchdown. Johnson again kicked the ex tra point. Ronald Draper a hurdler and quarter mile specialist. Reed, Stevenson, and E>raper all hail from Harlan High School in Chicago, Illinois. All three were members of last year’s Illinoisi state record mile relay teams with a time of 3:129 secondsi posted, the third fastest scholast ic time in the United Sates last year. -Intramural- (Continued from Page 6) quaintance with the activities and operation of the intramural program.
