Gagers Win Two Of Three Games
NCC came within two points
of winning three home games
last week as the Eagles won over
Rhode Island College and Mor
gan State College before los
ing a one-point decision to
arch-rival A&T State Univer
sity.
The Eagles turned back
Rhode Island, 77-70 last Tuesday
night before handing Morgan a
66-60 setback Thursday night.
The Aggies stopped NCC’s win
ning streak by coming from be
hind to win 65-64.
After the first week of the
second semester, the Eagles now
stand 8-7 for the season. In the
conference, NCC is 4-7 for the
campaign.
Coach Floyd Brown’s cagers
used clutch free throw shooting
to survive with wins over Rhode
Island and Morgan while A&T
gave the Durham quintet a taste
of its own medicine by turning
the tide at the charity line.
Rhode Island made 29 field
goals as compared with 26 two-
pointers for NCC, but the Ea
gles made 25 free throws to only
12 for the visitors from Provi
dence.
NCC went the last six minutes
without a field goal against
Morgan but the homestanders
were able to cash in on ten free
throws to hold off the late rally
by the Bears.
Against A&T, the Eagles made
28 two-pointers while the Ag
gies made only 22, but at the
15-foot strip, the Gate City
quintet made 21 or 35 as com
pared with eight of 14 for the
Eagles.
Joseph Pridgen led the scor
ing against Rhode Island with
22 points while Ron McCrim-
mon added 15 markers and Billy
Rose and Steve Humphrey each
had 12.
Pete Emond and Rick Wilson
tied for top scoring honors for
the Anchormen, who went down
to their first defeat of the sea
son after 13 straight wins, with
18 points each.
McCrimmon, hitting in long
jimipers from 30 feet or better,
tied Dennis Robinson with scor
ing honors against Morgan with
19 points each. Pridgen came in
with 17 points and led both
teams with 16 rebounds.
Richard Brandon led the scor
ing for Morgan with 14 points
while Bernard Barnes and Mar
shall Lewis each had a dozen.
Humphrey emerged as the
top pointmaker against the Ag
gies with 17 points. Pridgen col
lected 13, Robinson 11, and Mc
Crimmon 10. Robinson was vot
ed the most outstanding player
for the Eagles in the game
against A&T and was awarded
a trophy by Lipscomb’s Promo
tions for his achievement.
Daryl Cherry led A&T in
scoring with 16 points.
Eagles Dribble
Against Aggies
By ROBERT C. BELL, JR.
It seemed to be the most im
portant game of the season, or
so the fans seemed to think.
The Eagle’s encounter with our
arch-rival, the Aggies is always
a much anticipated event. Fans
packed the gym to capacity to
watch the tilt off. A&Ts Cher
ry got the first two points of
the game. The Eagles never
seemed upset or disturbed over
the ball-hawking tactics of the
Aggies and gave them “a fight
to the finish.”
NCC held the lead throughout
the first half and really gave
the Aggies a “scare,” carrying
a 10-point lead into the dressing
room at half-time. During the
second half, the Eagles jumped
off to a fast break and retained
the lead during most of the sec
ond half. Once, the score was
tied 54-54, but the Eagles “just
kept right on scoring.” Ronald
McCrimmon, dubbed during the
Morgan game as “backcourt
wdzard,” brought the fans to
their feet on several occasions.
NCC’s own Dennis Robinson
ran into foul trouble and had to
leave the game during its final
eight minutes of play with two
minutes to go in the final half.
The Aggies maneuvered the
game in their favor, scoring first
two free throws and then a field
goal. The Aggies hit two final
points, ending the game by a
one-point lead, 65-64.
