PAGE SIX THE CAMPUS ECHO FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1969 AN EAGLE IN FLIGHT—Ollie Carson goes to the air literally, soaring over a Shaw defender in North Carolina Central University’s 49-9 Homecoming conquest of the Shaw University Bears. By PAUL JERVAY “Never gonna give it up,” has been the theme of the Eagle defensive unit throughout the season, concerning that valuable football property, the yard. While the Eagle unit stubborn ly surrenders ground, it is seldom viewed with the anti cipation given NCCU’s explosive offensive attack. Let us look at the not so spectacular side of football, defense. One of the basic factors in the Eagles’ success this season has been the play of the de fensive unit. This unit has re peatedly given the offensive team the chance to retain pos session of the football through its outstanding plays. All com ponent parts of a fundamentally sound defensive unil must func tion in accord with one another for any degree of success. The secondary is one of these com ponents. To date, the Eagles' second ary has picked off a total of 16 enemy passes. Pete Quinn, Eagle right cornerback, has picked off a total of five enemy aerials, ranking him first in both the ClAA and NAIA in intercep tions. Quinn is closely pursued in this category by Charles Bellinger, left cornerback, who has four interceptions to his credit. Quad captain, strong safety Frank Bullock and the free safety Greg Richardson have been equally devastating to enemy passers with two in terceptions apiece. Armstrong NEVER GONNA GIVE IT UP The defensive backs have not acounted for all the inter ceptions this year. NCCU’s fine linebacking corps of William Covington, Robert Holloway, and Joseph Harrell have com bined for three interceptions while generally harrassing the opposing offense with their all- around play. Anchoring the defensive alignment is the CIAA’s ver sion of the fearsome foursome. They are quick, strong, and menacing, as opposing quarter backs can testify. The group consists of Michael Galbreath, Jerome Gantt, Russell Price, and Sam Singletary, quad cap tain. Assistant Coach Henry Lattimore commented that the aim of the front four is to keep the quarterback on the go. By achieving this goal, the front four can force many of the op position’s passes off target, and into the waiting hands of the alert secondary. After five games and 288 of the opposition’s plays, they have managed only 693 total yards for a per game average of 138.6 yards, according to NAIA statistics. Eagle statistics are equally impressive in de fending the pass. There have been only 100 attempts in five games with the opposition com pleting only 30 and intercepting 16. All of the opposing teams’ passes through the air have net ted 302 yards for a per game average of 60.4 yards. The defense might not be spectacular, but it is doing a G—J. Avery SE—N.
