HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Too early for holiday greetings ?
We may be two months early, but it's our way of introducing
something that's going to be around come January: A newspaper
for employees, staff and volunteer workers at Duke Hospital.
Why a Hospital paper? This is the way co-superintendents
Minetree Pyne and Lou Swanson put it:
"We hope that this newspaper
will fill needs which have been
recognized for a long time: A
need to bring employees closer
together and a need to keep them
informed of what is going on.
The administration has had no
regular method to meet the needs
"Communications were not so
difficult in past years. The
Hospital was smaller, employ
ees were fewer and, although
the old-timers won't admit it,
life was a little more leisurely.
Then, we all worked under one
roof.
"Today, we have a communica
tions problem. We work in four
different buildings; our staff is
large and heterogeneous.
Around our patients revolve the
activities of many groups, each
essential to fulfill modern medi
cine's capabilities. People with
in these groups have the pleasure
of sharing their thoughts with
one another. It is between
groups that communication is
most difficult.
"For years, the administration
has wanted to help provide com
munication between these groups.
A Hospital paper that belongs to
everyone seems to be the answer.
"The Hospital has requested
and received the sponsorship of
the Women's Auxiliary in pub
lishing this paper.
"The paper will be for every
body and will touch on all pha
ses of the Hospital and Medical
School. We know that people
want news, and we will try to
keep them up to date. We hope
that knowledge will bring under
standing and that understanding
will bring a group spirit that
will make Duke Hospital a
friendlier place to work.
"Happy people provide better
care for our patients, and hos
pital care is the only product
we have to sell.
"We are pleased that the paper
is about to be born. We solicit
the support of everyone connect
ed with Duke Hospital to make it
a success."
Mrs. H. Shelton Smith, pres
ident of the Auxiliary says,
"In its swaddling clothes and
with no name ! That is the in
auspicious state of our newest
project, this paper.
"But we, its parents {Hospital
Administration) and its nurse
(Hospital Auxiliary) have
dreams for this unnamed babe,
and like the partial observers of
the average infant, we believe
its potential to be far greater
than just average.
"As its nurse we, the Auxili
ary, shall feel responsible for
its health; and although we know
it will go through the expected
and disturbing periods of colic,
teething, crawling, toddling,
