Page 3 Thanks go to Mrs. Paul Horton and her vol\mteers and to dozens of Christmas shop pers who helped the Auxiliary close the old year with a most successful project, the Christmas Gift Shop. Al though our stock was smaller, due to the $1200 purchase of a rocking bed for the Hospital, this year's Shop featured many gift items, including more costume jewelry than ever before. We also want to thank Elon Clark for the su perb sign; Mrs. Deryl Hart and Dr. Howard Easley for turkeys they donated and to Murray Floyd for the ton of coal. We also had enthusiastic response to the annual Christ mas greenery sale, which Mrs. Bayard Carter con ducted. This year's Thanksgiving Sale, held annually for bene fit of the Christmas fund for the Children's Wards, was more successful than ever, and we added these toys as permanent additions to Pedi atrics: Stroller for Howland; rocking horse for the Clinic; and a play pen for Matas. Each child also received a well-filled stocking and a per sonal toy to be taken home. All the cakes, cookies, jams, pickles and candies do nated by members and friends have gained such a reputation for goodness that crowds as sembled in the lobby "market place" early. A large part of our financial success is due to the generosity of Dr. Hay wood Taylor and Mr. Lock hart of Lockhart Turkey F a r m, who donated fine tur keys; and to Mr. Barbour of HELEN KAISER PICKS A WINNER FOR HOSPITAL PAPER Congratulations to Miss Helen Kaiser, whose entry in the name-finding contest a;^pears on this month's masthead! Miss Kaiser will receive a *$10 check from the Woman's Auxiliary for submitting the winning entry. Because so many enthusiastic employees turned in ballots, Judges Ken Penrod, Mrs. Shelton Smith, Earl Porter, Minetree Pyne and Lou Swanson had quite a time deciding, but we'll all agree that they couldn't have picked a better one than InterCom. Director of Physical Therapy since 1943, Miss Kaiser is past president of the American Physiotherapy Association and was one of 30 Americans who attended the first Congress of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, held Sept. 6 - 12 in London. Before returning to Duke on Oct. 5, she visited rehabilitation centers in Denmark, Sweden and Nor way. NEW PSYCHIATRY HEAD HONORED Dr. Ewald W. Busse, Duke's new chairman of the Psychiatry Department, has been selected a Fellow in the American College of Physi cians. Dr. Busse joins 22 other Duke medical faculty members who are either fel lows or associates of ACP. Dr. Busse came here Nov. 1 from the Colorado General Hospital, where he was chief of the Division of Psychoso matic Medicine. He and his wife, Ortrude, and their three children, are residing at Faculty Apart ments. the A & P and Mr. Jordan of the C olonial who gave us marvelous snack baskets. A big hand to Mrs. C. P. Jones and her committee ! And many thanks to these friends whose donations helped to increase our Christ mas funds. - BUILDING PLAN - ( cont'd from page 1 ) medical center was first planned, many asked where Duke would get enough pa tients to justify such a large institution. However, within a few years after the Hospi tal's doors were opened in 1930, the need for expansion already was apparent. With appropriations from the Duke Endowment and Duke University, a wing for pri vate and semi-private patients and also offices and examin ing rooms for the Private Di agnostic Clinics was com pleted in 1940. By 1 9 52, the out-patient clinic had handled more than a million and a half visits, and more than 450,000 pa tients from all 48 states and more than 40 foreign coun tries had been admitted to the Hospital as bed patients. In addition to constant changes in the Hospital and Medical School building to meet the ever - increasing de mand for medical services, a separate structure, the Wil liam B. Bell Research Build ing, was erected.
