Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 3 Z)ltU Z)hat Pediatrics Betty (Mrs. Clyde) Dunn, former secretary in the Pediatrics Residents Office, has a new baby boy, nine pounds, plus, born in April. Dr. Dave Taylor will leave in July to enter private practice in Washing ton, N. C. Dr. Roy Appen leaves Duke in July to join the Air Force. Dr. Ed Mabry and Mary Nicholson Mabry (Duke Nursing School ’51) have a new son, born in April. Dr. John Zeliff will leave to enter practice in Greenville, S. C. Dr. Sarah lloyt will join the resi dent staff of Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.—Hilda Lewis. Surgery Dr. Don Kernodle of ENT Service reported to Gunter Air Force Base in Alabama April 4, going on to Ran dolph Field, Texas on April 25. Carolyn Birgel, Surgical PDC Lab, and Ben McCall, who graduated in June from the Duke Med School, were married on June 4 in Greensboro. Dr. McCall will be on medical service here next year. Jean Schultz (Surgical PDC Lab) and Dr. Wayne Schultz (medical staff) will leave for St. Louis this month, where Dr. Schultz will study radiology. Dr. Leonard Goldner sailed on the Queen Elizabeth with four other or- thoj)aedists for the U. S. and Canada, on April 20. He was chosen by the American Orthopaedic Association to attend an orthopaedic tour of Eng land as a guest of the British Associa tion, and will return June 15. Dr. Lenox D. Baker’s father, James D. Baker, died April 7 in Texarkana, Texas. Miss Jackie Harper transferred from Surgical PDC to the Divinity School. (Jackie is the daughter of Mrs. Sam Harper, the Auxiliary secretary.) Mrs. Jane Bennett returned as a secretary in the Compensation Office. Jane has a six-month-old daughter. i\Irs. Janice Torrance, secretary to Mr. Raper, and wife of football star Ralph Torrance, left June G to return to Macon, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. Torrance will be in Macon for a short time un til Ralph goes into the Marines in July. V^acationers: Mrs. Ruth Terry and liusband in Hollywood, Fla.; Mrs. Barbara Small and husband “Buck” at Myrtle Beach; Susie Upchurch at Holden’s Beach on houseparty; and Sarah Kirkpatrick at Topsail Beach houseparty. Mrs. Frances Lawrence’s son, Ted, and Ernestine O’Briant will be mar- x’ied on June 18. (Ted has been Sum mer help in SPDC.) Patricia Brinkley, dental assistant to Dr. Sapp, is engaged to Vernon Harris of the University of North Carolina.—Pat Waller and Nelle O’Briant. Medical School A Medical Alumni luncheon was held at Pinehurst during the State meetings with 96 graduates and wives, former house-staff, and faculty members attending. This annual luncheon grows as the years go by, and it is a great satisfaction to all to have so large a group together. mm* During the A.M.A. Meetings at Atlantic City, on June 8th, there will be a Medical Alumni dinner at the Traymore Hotel. If you are going to be there won’t you plan to attend, especially the faculty. Notify Tal- mage I’eele so that he may let Helen and Max Fischback know how many will be there. They are making the arrangements. * * * The barbecue for the 4th year stu dents and their wives was held Sun day night, June 5, at Turnages. The Medical and Surgical P.D.C.’s were hosts for this party. m * m The graduating class numbers 29 married students and the month of June will find others being added to the list (Pete Dukes, Harry Johnson, Tom Gore, Ben McCall, Dave Mitch ell, Pat Pagter, Dick Smith—these are the ones we know about). # # * Richard Steele was elected chair man of the Student Government for the Medical School on May 18. Other new officers are James Creighton, secretary-treasurer; Andrew Deiss (hold over), Erskine Carmichael and Carlyle Crenshaw, four year represen tatives; Sam Myrick, Robert Elling ton and Lawrence Bowles (hold over), third year representatives; and Clay ton McCracken, Edward Laughlin and Luther Barnhardt (hold over), second year representatives.—Mrs. F. Sweatt. m * m Nina Waite of the Insurance Office recently was elected new president of the Durham Chapter of the North Carolina Secretaries Association. * * * Judy Vann, Johanna Paul and Helen Ferkler of the Dean’s office. Dr. Bu.sse’s office, and superintend ent’s office, respectively, were guests on a houseparty this week-end at Morehead City. Despite the cool weather, a good time was had by all. * * * Minetree Pyne is still all smiles. Mrs. Pyne presented him with a new daughter on May 2. Her name is Patricia Eskridge Pyne, and with those initials, we can guess what her nickname will be. * • « Pathology A daughter, Christina, was born to Dr. and Mrs. Walter Benson in March. Agnes (Mrs. Durward) Powell has returned to her job as a stenographer in the department. Her third child, a boy, was born in March. Mrs. Jean Blackstone and her sister, Doris Tew, are planning a trip to Florida and Key West and while there will take u cruise to Havana.— Jean Blackstone. • • « Physiology Dr. Erik Krogh, who is a brother of Mrs. Schmidt-Nielsen is visiting the Schmidt-Nielsens and is doing some exi)erimental work in the physiology dej)artment. He is with the Depart ment of Anatomy at the university in Aarhus, Denmark. * • « Pharmacy Edward Superstine, assistant chief pharmacist since June, 1953, resigned on May 25, to join the Technical Di vision of the West Disinfecting Com pany, Long Island City, N.
