Page 4 Duke Hospital, InterCom ilrs. Margaret Jones, Medical PDG, went to Richmond one day last week. It was a pleasant, enjoyable trip. Dr. and Mrs. Bob McWhorter have adopted a baby boy, born July 1, 1955. Bob was a senior assistant resident here in 1953-54. Dr. and Mrs. John Barrett are parents of a new baby boy, born in November. Jlrs. Jessica Myers visited our department briefly during the week of November 14. She reported that Dr. Myers and all the fellows he took with him to Pittsburgh are w'orking hard and are happy. Dr. and Mrs. Jim Warren returned from California on November 15. The ti’ip was principally a speaking tour for Dr. Warren but there was suffi cient time to enjoy some of the pleasant activities available in that part of the country. Enroute, they visited Dr. and Mrs. Ted Schwartz in Chicago, and Dr. and Mrs. Jim Scott in Salt Lake City. Dr. Samuel Martin has been ap pointed Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department in the new University of Florida Medical School. He will leave us in the spring. Congratulations to Dr. Martin and the University of Florida. We shall hate to see him go. Surgery Dr. William P. J. Peete has been named assistant professor of surgery and assistant to Dean W. C. Davison. Dr. Peete formerly was Moseley Traveling fellow at Harvard Medical School. Peggy Upchurch, formerly an al lergy technician with Dr. Hansen, who left us and went to Greensboro, has returned. This time she’s working as a technician in the Urology lab. Nell 0 ’Brient has been on vacation in Flordia. Shirley Mitchell, is a new member of the staff in Surgical PDC Business Office. Her husband is a first year medical student. They came to Duke from California. Sylvia Berry has resigned her posi tion in the Urology Department. She was married November 26 to Bill Clayton. The Claytons will live in Roxboro. Social Service Madge Aycock has joined the staff as social worker on the Obstetrical- Gynecological, Pediatric Service. Madge was a member of this depart ment from 1947 to 1951 and has re turned as a temporary worker. Mary Hennessee, social worker on the Medical Service, was married on October 8 to Raymond Brown of Dur ham. Sixteen Superintendents and 'staff from 13 county welfare departments met on October 13 for an all-day session with the administration and Social Service to discuss mutual problems. Thelmo Falope, Hospital Admin istrative Interne from Honduras, has begun a 5 weeks’ orientation period with Social Service. Harriette Amey, Helen Lewis and Isabel Pelton attended the i50th An niversary Celebration of Medical Social Work held October 20-22 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Janet Wien has been elected Vice- President of the newly organized State Chapter of the National Re habilitation Association. Merle Foeckler, with other members of the Paraplegic and Amputee team conferences, participated on October 29 in a panel at the annual meeting of the N. C. Society for Crippled Children and Adults in Charlotte. Janet Wien attended a meeting in New York City October 31-November 1 of the Medical Social Work Ad visory Committee of the American Cancer Society. Merle Foeckler met with potential volunteers of the Durham-Orange County Heart Association for an orientation session. Dr. Mohammed Abdel Razzok, Director of Health Education and Medical Social Service in Egypt, has been a visitor to the Department. Dorothy Post, social w'orker in Kirby Clinic, is out of the Hospital, discharged on November 3, after seven weeks of illness. Anesthesiology Dr. Bourgeois-Gavardin was wel comed on the staff as Assistant Pro fessor of Anesthesiology on August 1, 1955. Miss Mary Cami)bell, Chief Nurse Anesthetist, returned on November 13 from a 10-day vacation in Ber muda. Dr. C. R. Stephen’s exliibit, “Car diovascular Reaction to Rapid Anes thesia Induction,” was awarded third prize among the scientific exhibits which were presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists meeting held in Boston from October 13 to November 3. Miss Elizabeth Partridge, Nurse Anesthetist, resigned on November 15 to accept a position nearer her home. Ob and Gyn Dr. Bayard Carter was host to the American Gynecology Travel Club the first week in November. Welcome to Mrs. Edith Horne, secretary to Drs. Parker and Turner; she w’as formerly with SPDC. Wedding bells rang out for Dr. B. C. West and Miss Peggy Hammet. Miss Hammet is a student nurse here at Duke. Congratulations are in order for Dr. Paul Green, Jr. and Mrs. Green; a lovely daughter w’as the new arrival. Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Charles II. Peete, formerly of Ob-Gyn and who is now stationed in Key West, and Mrs. Peete, the former Candy Jonas of SPDC. They, too, have a daughter. Bacteriology A son was born to Dr. and Mrs. T. B. Thames on October 23. This is their second boy. Pat was Dr. David T. Smith’s former secretary. Out Patient Clinic Things in the Public Dispensary are busy as usual,—many people come and go—and often from long dis tances. Their problems are varied, but we try to assist them in every way we can, but nothing gives these pa tients assurance and confidence as much as the help from the Auxiliary members. Two men were overheard the other day discussing the Clinic. One said, “You know every one out here is very good and kind, they an swer your (piestions and tell you where to go, hut those ladies with the red coats on they just take you there. ” We are very sorry to report one of our workers, Mildred Ellis, is confined to the hospital now, after an operation last Saturday morning.
