Mary Trent Semans, the guest speak er, had as her topic Television as a Medium of Public Relations. Now the Auxiliary itself has twice ventured forth in this medium. See the story in this issue of InterCom. The Thanksgiving sale (November 22 in the Hospital lobby) reconfirmed our faith in the good taste—or taste buds—of the Hospital populace. Paulette Kerr, a ])atient on Ilowland, drew the numbers for prizes of turkey, coal, snacks and perfume. Sycho Pickett, Mrs. Gaither Pratt, Mrs. Robert Wil son. For those who were able to be l)resent at the Membership IMeeting the Children’s Service gave an in- s])iring account of their work. In this presentation Mrs. Tuthill was assist ed by I\Iiss Cornelia Watson, head of Octcupational Therapy in the Hospi tal; Miss Judy Hudson, chairman of the Play Nurse Committee; and Miss Phyllis O’Shinsky, chairman of the YWCA East Campus volunteers. The combined effoi'ts of this group pro- On Sunday afternoon November 6, nineteen members of the original Staff and Faculty of Duke ^Medical School were memorialized in a simple ceremony in the I\Iedical School Lobby. Dr. James T. Cleland, Dean of the University Chapel, presided at the Ceremony. Platpies were placed in memory of Dr. Frances Huntington Swett, first Professor and Chairman of Anatomy; Dr. Frederic ]\Ioir Hanes, Florence .McAlister Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department; Dr. William Alexandre Perlzweig, first Professor and (’hair- nian of Biochemistry; and Miss Bessie Baker, fii'st Dean of the Duke School of Nursing. vide a jilay program on Howland or Matas from 9 A.M. til] 8 ::iO P.M. A mobile play cart equipped with toys, games, books, pujipets, craft materials and a record j)layer serves as base for a varied diet of entertain ment for the small patients. The activities are arranged to allow child ren of varying ages and degrees of disability to take part together. They even publish a newspaper! Mrs. Tut hill says of the Children’s Service “Our aim is to keep the children hapi)y while staying at Duke Hos- ])ital.” The Auxiliary will close for the holidays, Friday, December 16th, at 4 P.M. We’ll be back on duty Tues day morning, January 8rd.
