Dr. Smith received the A.B. degree
from Furman University and the
M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School
of Medicine. He joined the Duke
medical fa(‘ulty in 1980.
Dr. Smith is chairman of the De
partment of Microbiology and the De-
l)artment of Preventive Medicine and
Public Health in the Duke School of

Auxiliary
On April 23 at the Auxiliary’s An
nual Meeting new ofScei's were
elected. Look for their i)icture in
this issue of Inthk-Coji. We want
you to know our YlPs! Mrs. Julian
Kuffin, retiring 2)resident, was pre
sented by Ross Porter M'ith a ]>ast
I)resident’s ])in for two years of de
voted service.
The Ways and Means Connuittee,
with Mrs. Bayard Carter as chairman,
held a new kind of runuimge sale on
ilay 20. Dubbed a “Clothesline
Sale” the clothes realh’ ivere on the
clothesline in Mrs. Carter’s backyard.
S])ring flowers and home-made cakes,
cookies and punch were on sale, also.
A pretty day and the usual excellent
cooperation of members of the Ways
and Means Committee and of the gen
eral Auxiliary membershii) brought
off a successful sale. The next morn
ing i)rofits were reported as “a hun
dred dollars with more to come.”
Mr. L. E. Swanson asked for ten
to fifteen auxiliary members June 1
and 2 (Commencement weekend) to
act as hostesses for a preview of the
new wing arranged for visiting
alumni. An exciting assignment!
How many of you are familiar with
the work of the Registration Service?
This service is stationed at the Out-
Patient De])artment, where volunteers
obtain necessary data regarding new
j)atients coming to the Clinic-. Hos-
])ital yiersonnel in charge instruct the
volunteer in her duties. A few months
ago a new branch was added; Regis
tration Service for Kirby Clinic.
Now staffed by Mrs. Phili]) Kistler
and Mrs. William P. Deiss, this phase
of the service will be expanded when
it moves to the new wing. The serv
ice in the Out-Patient Clinic operates
on a regular schedule of five days
