here in the Bell Building when a little
blue parakeet dubbed “Peanuts” was
found on the tracks outside the build

holder.
And the newest addition to the
group besides “Peanuts” is Mrs.
Mary Joan Brvine who is replacing
Beverly Konicek. Mrs. Kouicek is
leaving Durham as her husband be
gins a three-year term in the United
States Marine Corps.
Biochemistry is also losing one of
their Post-Doctoral U.S.P.H.S. Fel
lows, Dr. Dan Bernstein. Dan, Marge,
and little Jeff will be moving to Bos
ton, Mass., as Dan begins his duties
as senior assistant resident at the
Peter P>ent lirigham Hospital.

Dr. and Mrs. Fred Zechman are
j)leased to announce a new addition to
their family, Ricky, born on the 26th
of April.
Also congratulations to Karl and
Barbara Agre, who are the proud par
ents of a baby girl, Susan, born May
2nd.
The Physiology Department is
sorry to lose Alice Long. Alice is
leaving June 1 to accept a job as re
search technician in cardiovascular
laboratory at the University of Wis
consin in Madison. We wish Alicre

Psychiatry
Dr. Walter D. Obrist has joined our
staff as Assistant Professor of mc'dical
jisychology.
The staff" at Kirby Clinic recently
had a ]>arty to celebrate “moving into
the new wing.” This was in Dr.
Charles Llewellyn’s home.
Dr. Charles Spielberger recently at
tended the Southeastern Psychologi
cal Association meeting in Nashville
and the Midwestern Psychological
meeting in Chicago.
Kathy Huggins, who was secretary
to Dr. Cohen and Dr. Parsons, has
moved to Danville, where her hus
band, Ted, will practice law.
Evelyn Chesson was married ilay
8, to Billy Gay-Lord, a student at
State College in Raleigh.
On May 16, the Psychiatry resi
dents entertained for Dr. Leslie Hoh-
man, Dr. Talmadge Peele, and Dr.
D. C. Hetherington, who were their
instructors in a recently comjileted
neuroanatomy course.
Mrs. Lennie Muse was a panelist at
the North Carolina Hampton Insti
tute Alumnae Conference and was
also a participant in Social Work
(’areer Conference at N. C. College.

Medicine
Dr. and Mrs. Ernst Peschel left on
May 17 for Europe. They will visit
Germany, Spain and France.
Dr. Callaway will spend most of the
month of June on a tour to the Far
East as consultant for the U. S. Air
Force.
During the Atlantic City meetings
early in May, Dr. Stead was feted by
the ten people who have been his chief
residents since he came to Duke in
1947. They are Sam Martin, “Crip”
Holland, Jim Schieve, Grace Kerby,
Bill Hollingsworth, Gerry Kodnan,
Harry i\IcPherson, Mort Bogdonoft',
Sid Osterhout, and Don ilerritt.
Judy Mitchell Thompson has moved
from hei' job in Medical OPC to the
job of secretary to Dr. Henry McIn
tosh. We are glad to have her.
Dr. John Hickam, who recently
com])leted several years of service on
the Scientific Advisory Board of the
U. S. Air Force, was honored in May
at Patrick Air Force liase in Florida.
At a full board meeting of the Scien
tific Advisory Board, the Secretary
of the Air Force, Donald A. Quarles,
presented Dr. Hickman with the
('iviliau Excejitioual Services Award.

Private Medical Laboratory
The Private Medical Laboratory is
now temporarily located in the Cen
tral Laboratory in the new wing of
the hospital. It will remain here until
the remodeling of the old laboratory

Mrs. Ann Eure has i-esigned her
position in the Surgical Stenographic
Office to return with her husband to
their home in Morehead Citj\
Mrs. Carolyn Weiss has resigned as
secretary to Dr. Lenox Baker and
will go to the Naval Hospital, Great
Lakes, 111. in J uly where her husband,
Ed, will begin an internship.
The Surgery Department is proud
of Dr. Phil Kistler and Dr. lien Flowe
who won first and second places in the
Duke Hospital Golf Tournament.
Ann Wells, formerly a secretary in
Dr. Anderson’s office, had a baby boy
on May 17.
■ Dr. James O’Neill will finish his
residency in E. E. N. & T. on July 1.
He is going to Maine to study for
three months, and will then retui'u to
be an associate with Dr. Anderson.
Dr. and Mrs. Earl Galleher are the
proud parents of a new boy: William
Wheelwright Galleher.

Miss Wien has really been busy in
and out of the office lateljM She
s])ent April 1-2 helping give a work
shop on Social Casework Techniques
Office in Montgomery, Ala., and with
iliss Aycock and j\liss Pelton attended
the N. C. Conference for Social Serv
ice in Asheville April 28-80. Miss
Wien was elected Vice-President of
the Conference. On Jlay 15-4 iliss
Wien attended the Executive Com
mittee Meeting of the Medical Social
Work Section of the National Asso
ciation of Social Workers in New
York. Miss Wien is one of two Dele
gates from the Medical Social Work
Section to the National Delegate As
sembly.
