Page 6 Duke Hospital, InterCom was delicious and everything would have really been wonderful if it hadn’t been a farewell party for Mrs. Ruth Pittman, Medical Social Worker who left on May 18. Her husband, Robert, having just received his Mas ter’s degree in Political Science at UXC has taken a position in Montana. We haven’t been able to replace Mrs. Pitman, so Miss Pelton and Miss Stanford arc taking her services at the present time. The third Cardiovascular Institute was held May 14-17 for AVelfare Workers and Vocational Rehabilita tion Counselors, and on the evening of the 14th the Social Service Staff members had the participants of the Institute as guests at a i)icnic at Duke Forest. ]\Iiss Merle Foeckler and Miss Isa bel Pelton attciuled the National Con- fci'pnce of Social Work in Philadel phia, May 18-26.—By Louise KocheUe. Nursing Highlights Our congratulations to seven rising seniors in the School of Nursing who have been tapi)cd for Santa Filomena, honorary society for recognition of leadership, nursing achievement and academic excellence. The new mem bers are: Barbara Hanger, Joaji Finn, Beverly Brown, Betsy Allen, Ann Brueggemann, P]llen Bond, and Pat Drake. We hope you kept up with the ]Mov- ing Up Day Exercises in the Durham papers . . . but in case you missed the award Avinners . . . Marguerite Thaiu won the Mosely Award for the great est skill in Nursing Arts, and Mary Jo Ingalls won the Florence Nightin gale Alumnae Award for outstanding leadership, scholarshij), and nursing skill! We are so pleased that they both ])lan to stay on at Duke after graduation! Gloria Stevens ]>lans a month’s A’a- cation in New York. Phoebe Robin son leaves Duke as her husband will open liis law practice in Pa. Bloise Miller is taking a LOA to b> with her husband while he is a IIosy)ital Chaj)- hiin in Winston-Salem. Marian I\Ias- lin, London’s gift to Duke Hospital, I)lans a motor trip throughout the country. Jerry Bodie leaves for Philadelphia to attend her sister’s graduation from medical school. Elea nor Jenkins is planning a two-week vacation in New York state. Edith lirocker leaves from New York via Air France to Rome for the ICN Con vention ! Anna Lee Fauver plans a trip to Staunton, Va for her vacation. Ann Snell leaves for Havana and Ber- nuida this summer . . . needless to say, some i)eoj)le sure do know how to plan their vacations!! I.aura Harbison, Carol Mitchum, and Rose Forgione are looking forward to their Public Health Institute on Obstetrics and Infant Care this summer in Saluda, N. C. Ethel McCullum had a twin kle in lier eye when she announced that she planned to go on a fishing tri]) in Wilmington ! ( Maybe she will furnish us a picture of her “prize catch” for the next issue??) liernadine Mussleman rej)orts that she and her husband plan a sight seeing and visiting relatives trip to Conn., Pa., and N. Y. Nancy and Walt Lusk will try to crowd in a busy schedule in a week to visit friends and relatives in N. Y., Mass., and Pa. They are certain to have a nice trip . . . we have first-hand reports froTU Pat Walsh that N. Y. (Corinth, to be more specific!) is wonderful this time of year! Everyone is going North . . . Alice Macznski has chosen Pa. for her vacation. When 1 asked Margaret Wells what her plans were she said, “I’ll be lucky if I get to Carolina Beach for a 3-day weekend!” Mary Jenkins prefers the West Coast (San Francisco) . . . and has exciting plans witb her family and friends! Weddings . . . naturally, June is here! Phyllis Terry and John Alli-ed will be married June 2!) in Kingsj)ort, Tenn. Phyllis Avill continTie working here at Duke while John completes his Master’s degree at UNC. Carol Clark and Kathy James both plan a June wedding . . . watch the j)apers for all the Duke brides! The Surgi cal Head Nurses gave a sho^ver for Mrs. Bill Waller (the former Helen Cushing Plyler) . . . we know the “Unit” will be a success under her leadership! Ijong jiist won’t seem the same . . . Marie Haupt has left to join the Marines! No, just her husband who is stationed in Quantico! Bobby Fislier leaves for Tampa, Fla. where her husband will be interning at Tampa General. IMickey Shinnick and Mary Jo Arena plan to go to San Francisco in July to work at Stanford U. Victor Aiulerson resigns to work on his degree here at Duke. We also regret that Lucy Hunt is leaving . . . hoi)e she will be very happy in her new ])osition at McPhersons. Congratulations to Polly Carden who has been made Head Nurse in Bronchoscopy Clinic. Joan Jones leaves her place on Halsted to do PRN in the Clinic. Mrs. Goswick, SPDC, is r(‘cuf)crating from her recent oper ation at home. Best wishes for a spe('dy recover}^! Libby Hunt is having a wondA-ful time ill N. Y. seeing all the shows and being a real “tourist”! Elaine Glea son has been made Assistant Head Nurse on Nott! Dorthe Ahlberg from Fin land is coming to do special work with orthopedics, and Noel Cubitt from Austi'alia will be assigned to j)edi- atrics!
