Baker National Award to Dr. Baker On January 28, Dr. Lenox D. liaker, of the Duke Hospital Ortho pedic Surgery stait", received the 1957 Physician’s Award of President Ei senhower’s C'ommittee on Employ- •iient of the Physically Handicapped, hie award is given annually to the doctor who, in the opinion of a group of impartial judges, has made the greatest contribution to the physical ly handicapped. Dr. Baker was se lected from among 37 physicians throughout the Nation who had been recommended by their Governor’s Commissions. The formal presenta tion of the award, an illuminated sci’oll bearing the signature of Presi dent Eisenhower, was made by Major General Melvin J. jMaas, Chairman of the President’s Committee on Em ployment of the Physically Handi capped, at the annual convention of the American Medical Association’s Congress of Industrial Health in Mil waukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Baker is w'ell known for his leadership in the battle against cere bral palsy. A key figure in organ izing the N. C. Cerebral Palsy Hos- ]iital and Cerebi-al Palsy School in ^^)urham. Miss Joan Klug is the new receptionist. Psysical Therapy Twenty-one physical therapy stu dents were graduated at exercises held in the Union Ballroom on De cember 12. Colonel Harriet Lee, A.]\I,S.(1, gave the commencement ad dress. Her subject was Some Guide- posts to Frofessional Maturity. Of these students, four remained in North Carolina, and two of them, iliss Penny Wood and IMrs. Robert H. Gibbs, formerly Miss Carolyn Alderman, we are pleased to welcome as staft' members. On December 1, Mrs. Eleanor Malone accepted an interim appoint ment on the physical therapy teaching staff. In addition to being a gradu ate of the Duke physical therap.y pro gram, ilrs. Malone is a graduate of Agnes Scott and Columbia Teachers (’ollege. ]\Irs. ilalone has had exten sive experience in the physical ther apy management of patients with chronic diseases, especially poliomy elitis, and will be responsible for this phase of the physical therapy pro gram. Obstetrics and Gynecology Welcome back to Dr. Van Freeman who spent the month of January at Boston Lying-In hospital. Mr. May nard Guderian, the exchange staff member, has gone back to Boston. Also, we welcome back Louise director of the hospital since 1950. He is a member of the North Carolina Employ the Physically Handicapped Commission. Last year he was honored by this Commission as the North Car olina physician who had done the most during 1956 in behalf of physi cally handicapped persons. Kaufmaini who has returned from California to resume her work in the Papuicolaou smear laboratory. Dr. Paul Green, Jr., has left the dc- jiartment to begin practice in Salis bury, North Carolina. W^'elcome to two new internes: Howard Satterfield and Robert El lington. Surgery Dr. Victor Politano has returned to Duke from Boston and is now on the Urology Staff. Dr. Prank Clippinger has com pleted his residency in Ortiiopaedics and is now on the Orthopaedic Sen ior Staff at Duke. ]\riss ]\Iary Forrest has resigned as secretary to Dr. Banks Anderson to open a dress shop in Hillsboro, her home town. She has been replaced l)y ]\Irs. Helen McCandless of Dur ham. Mrs. Ethel Girvin has been em- ])loyed as a part-time secretary in Dr. Anderson’s office. Surgical Private Diagnostic Clinic Mrs. Grayce Carver, R.N., has moved to ]\Ionroe, N. C. Her husband will be working in Charlotte. Miss Judith Rush, R.N., of Green ville, S. C., and Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, has joined the nursing staff in S.P.D.C. She will fill the vacancy left by ]\lrs. Carver. Mrs. Isabelle Carroll joins tlie In- •surance Office of S.P.D.C. Mrs. Katherine Wilkinson joins the Business Office. Medicine The Department of Medicine has received 124 ap])lications for medical internship for July 1958 and 90 for junior assistant residency.
