Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 5 Meet Emil Le Clereq, author of the caricatures on the opposite page. Dr. Le Clercq is resident in endocrinology with Dr. Hamblen. A native of Belgium, he received his M. D. degree in 1951 from Liege University. He continued there with work in his specialty until 1956, when he came to Charlotte, N. C., as resident in obstetrics. He came to Dui^e in 1957. Dr. Le Clercq and liis wife live in Cliapel Hill, where Mrs. Le Clercq works as a technician at Memorial Hos pital. At the same time he was pursu ing his medical education. Dr. Le Clercq managed to study sculpture for three years at the Academy of Brussels. The sketches of which these are a part were on exhibition in the Doctors’ Dining Room and liave now been published in a port folio. Orders for the portfolio can be addressed to Dr. Le Clercq at Box 2964 Duke Hospital. Open House On March 4 from 2 ;30 to 4 P.M. an informal get-together for Hospital, Medical School and Nursing personnel and students was held in the lounge of Baker House. It is hoped that this is the first of a series of such gather ings w'hich will give all members of tlie Medical Center family a chance to get better acquainted. Student Tour Recognizing the need to interest high school students in scientific fields, the Coastal Plain Heart Association, which serves Xash, Edgecombe, Hali fax, Pitt and Martin Counties, made arrangements in February for 26 higli school students from that area to visit Duke Medical Center. The program for the students at Duke was planned by Di'. John B. Hickam, President of the North Carolina Heart Association, and included observation of work in progress in cardiovascular research. ^^Niek” Carter Travel Club The “Nick” Carter Travel Club held its seventh annual meeting Feb ruary 7-10 in Tampa, Florida. Organized in 1951, the club is com posed of obstetricians and gynecolo gists who have trained at least one year under Dr. Bayard Carter. Some 50 physicians from nine states and the District of Columbia make up the club’s membership. Presenting pa pers from Duke were Drs. Violet Tur ner and Roy Parker. Other Duke and Durham physicians present were Drs. Bayard Carter, Robert N. Cread- ick, Eleanor B. Easley, and T. F. Ad kins. Dr. Beard National Lecturer Dr. Joseph W. Beard has been named a Sigma Xi National Lecturer for 1958. His tour which will cover Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida, be gan March 21 and w'ill continue for six weeks. One of several scientists chosen Signui Xi to address chap ters over the United States, Dr. Beard will speak on “Viruses as a Cause of Cancer. ’ ’ At the Stern Symposium in New York in February, Dr. Beard reported that virus-like particles have been ob served in hiunan leukemia cells at Duke by Dr. Donald F. Parsons of the virus research team. Appointed to Com mittee on Radiation Dr. Ewald W. Busse, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Philip Handler, Chairman of the Bioeliemistry Department, have been appointed to a joint committee of the Atomic Energy Commission and the National Institutes of Health to study radiation in relation to aging and length of life. Purpose of the com mittee is to stimulate research and {)lan conferences on the effects of ra diation upon the life span and the possible usefulness of radiation in un derstanding the aging process. Tlie five women receiving the highest number of votes will be entered in the final contest. (i. Pictures of the five finalists will be displayed on the wall outside the Doctors’ Diiung Room. 7. Each vote in the fiiuil contest will cost 10^. Be sure to vote on the finalists. 8. The winner of the contest will be kept secret until The Country Fair and Carnival, May 10, at which time she will be crow'ued “Queen and Outstaiuling Per sonality of Duke Medical Center 1958.” The runners-up will com pose the Ladies of her Court.
