NEW FACES AND OLD Medicine Dr. Harvey Estes has assumed the job of chief of the medical service at the Durham VA Hospital. He lias ref)laced Dr. William Deiss, who left to join Dr. John Hiekam’s staff at the Indiana University Medical Center. Psychiatry Dr. Seymour Axelrod, Mrs. Mary M. Huse, and Mr. Carl Bisdorfer have recently been added to our sen ior staff. Ann Gunn, Mrs. Meade McLain, Linda Talbert, Ann Blalock, Mrs. Frances Martin, and Mrs. Adrienne Bromberg are new secretaries in the Department. Joyce Brown, formerly Dr. Hohman’s secretary, will spend the next year in Europe. Mrs. Martie 0 ’Shaughnessy has taken Mrs. Joan Mancini’s place as nurse in the OPC. Ann Toler is the new administrative clerk working with her. Back on a visit, Dr. Jerry Fleis- chaker, now on duty with the Air Force. Pediatrics Jim Barham, Bill Bryant, Jack Evans, Charlie Hartsell, Chuck Warner and A1 White are staying at Duke on the Pediatric Service. From other places come Paul Bennett, Bill Bourland, Becky Buckley, Paul Capp, Fuzzy Fendrich, Phil Hall and Ike Marcadis. Dr. Mithat Coruh comes all the way from Turkey. LaVerne Strickland Johnston, new Appointments Secretary in the Clinic, replaces Pat Mullen w'ho returned to teaching school. Mrs. Billie WMght fills Pansy Hedrick’s post. Mrs. Rosemary Weber is now in Dr. Arena’s and Dr. McBryde’s office. Lucy Crossland and Ruby Moore are new in Dr. Doris Howell’s lab. Recent visitors: Dave Jones, his wife and four months old daughter, now stationed in Fort Worth, Texas, with the Army. Anesthesia Dr. Kenneth D. Hall, joined our staff on September 22. He was formerly on the staff' of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. Welcome to the new residents who began the two year course in Anes thesiology July 1; Dr. Charles Ram sey, Birmingham, Ala.; Dr. Edwin J. Lilly, Columbus, Ohio; Dr. Jean Quintal and Dr. Gerard Lavoie, Mon treal, Canada; Dr. Shaotsu Lee, Honan, China; and Dr. Bienvenido P. Cabotaje, the Philippines. Medical Record Library Mrs. Ann Mitchell, information desk, resigned Sept. 12 to join her husband, Charles, in Ohio. Welcome to our new file clerks: Peggy Felmet, Libby Young, and Pearlie Thompson. Surgery and Surgical PDC Ann Creadick is part-time secre tary in Dr. Ralph Arnold’s office. Judy Rush, R. N., left Sept. 9. Margaret and Barbara Hawley, who worked in Surgical PDC during the summer, have returned to school at Carolina. Margaret and Barbara are twins. Mrs. Becky Franklin left July 26. Mrs. Beverly Green has left to move to Raleigh where her husband is employed. Mrs. Delores Grubbs is employed at the Information Desk. She is the wife of Mr. B. A. Grubbs, administra tive assistant to the Department of Surgery. Mrs. Lou Ruggles joins the Busi ness Office; and Mrs. Janet Pilking- ton, R. N., comes to SPDC. Dr. Violet Turner returned to work Sept. 8. X-Ray Dr. Joseph Isley has moved to Fort Myers, Florida, and Dr. Harry Mc Gee to Savannah, Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Byrd have moved to Danville, Va., where Mr. Byrd will be Chief Technician. Mrs. Evelyn Voaklander has gone to Sa vannah and Blaine Gaddy to Fort Myers, Fla. Joyce Hughes replaces Mrs. Erna Spundy. Mrs. Shirley Riggsbee is now em ployed by the Overnight Trucking Co. Dr. Dewey Barton joins the staff' as a Resident Radiologist. Welcome to new Staff Technicians: Susan Maxwell, Leon Winn, Martha Davis and Betsy Brogden; and Stu dent Technicians: Pat Mitchell, Frank Wells, Mrs. Polly Pridgeon, Carolyn Cates, Laura Smith, Conrad Rich, Margaret Ashworth, Carolyn Griffin, Frances Crump] er and Brenda Bullock. John Cahoon is out of the hospital and back on the job. The Depart ment is happy to have him back. Physical Therapy Welcome to some new staff mem bers : Mrs. Carol Hodgins, a graduate of the University of Toronto, comes from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Lois Perkins is working under a departmental research grant and also continuing work on her Ph.D. in Anatomy; Mary Clyde Singleton, our former Clinical Supervisor, is also do ing graduate w'ork in Anatomy. Mr. Roy Gilchrist is presently en rolled in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina. ON THE GO Dr. and Mrs. Peschel of the De partment of Medicine spent some weeks in Europe, making the trip over by plane and back by ship. They visited their families in Germany, drove into Italy, and vacationed on the island of Elba. (Continued on page 8)
