Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 7 Dr. Conant Chairman of Microbiology Dr. Norman F. Conant, professor of mycology at the Duke University Medical School, has been appointed chairman of the School’s Department of Microbiology to succeed Dr. David T. Smith. Dr. Conant joined the Duke medi cal faculty in 1935. A si)ccialist in mycology, the study of fungus dis eases, he is director of the Medical Center’s mycology laboratory. An nual summer mycology courses headed bj" Dr. Conant have trained some 150 physicians in the detection and iden- tifieation of disease-causing fungi. In 1950 he received the Poteat Award of the North Carolina Academy of Sci ence for a pioneei’ing fungus study. Physical Therapy Course Marks Fifteenth Year This year marked the fifteenth an niversary of the Course in Physical Therapy. In observance of the au- niversarj' an open house for high school and college students and the riniversity Community was held No vember 12. This was followed by a workshop on “Utilizing Neuro|)hysio- logical Phenomena in the Treatment of Hemiplegic Patients” conducted bj'^ Miss Signe Hrunnstrom of the Col lege of Physicians and Surgeons, (Co lumbia University. Members of the Duke facultj' particij)ating were: Dr. l.ienox I). Baker, Dr. R. Frederick Becker, Dr. E. Charles Kunkle, Dr. John B. Pfeiffer, Miss Eleanor Flana gan and Miss Helen Kaiser. The activities concluded with the gradua tion dinner in the Union Ballroom on November 24. At that time the four teen members of the Class of 1958 were awarded their physical therapy certificates and were ])resented with their active membershij) in the Ameri can Physical Therapy Association. Record Library Acquires New Sorter The recent addition of a new sorter to the IBM department of the Medi cal Record Librarj' enables the de partment to give faster service on the many research subjects they are asked to do. The machine sorts approxi mately 650 cards per minute. Dur ing the month of October twenty-two research studies were done. The Medical Record Library is in the process, also, of changing all rec ord forms for addressograph use. NEEDED: A record player for Meyer Ward. Dr. Tsai Shia Lin On November IM, the Duke Hos- I)ital Woman’s Auxiliary held a mem bership tea honoring Dr. Lin. A pediatrician by j)rofession, Dr. Lin is also i)resident of the Woman’s Hos pital Auxiliary, National Taiwan Uni versity Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan (Formosa), Free Chiiui. Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Estes, Medi cine, a new daughter, Elizabeth (Beth), who joins Sally, Susan, Becky and John. Dr. and Mrs. Frank Fazio, former Urology resident, a daughter, Sharon Ann, August 20, in St. Peters burg, Fla. WEDDING BELLS Dr. Jerome S. Harris, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, was married to Dr. Jac(iueline Hymans on October 25 iu Denver, Colorado. Dr. Hj'mans who is a graduate of Leyden University, the Netherlands, was a member of the Duke Depart ment of Medicine for several years. She will complete a tour of duty with the U. S. Army in the early summer. Dr. James Boulware and Jane (^handler. Pediatrics, were married in Sumter, South Carolina, Novem ber 29. Louise Hester, Autopsy Secretary, became the bride of Mr. David Eu banks of Oxygen Therapy on Octo ber 2\). They are now living on Ves- son Avenue. Merita (known as “Reita”) Keith, Cashier in S.P.D.C. received a lovely diamond on November 11. Her fi ance is Sluart Phipps of Durliam.
