Duke Hospital, InterGom Page 3 From The Auxiliary By Dorothy yiekei- During’ the past few inoiitlis several outstanding requests liave been re ceived by the Auxiliary. At the March Hoard meeting three of tlu'se requests were reviewed and granted. The Neurosui'geons requested j)ur- ehas(> of a special valve used in the treatment of hydrocephalic children. It was stated that treatment of liydi'o- (‘C])halus has always been poor because no ideal surgical procedure has b(‘en devised. Best r(>sults to date are ob tained by shunting the cerebrospinal fluid, but unfortunately, the valve used for this costs $60.00. Fre(|uent- ly the ])atieiit’s family cannot afford this. Xor can the Hospital assume this cost. The Auxiliary Board voted to ])ui'chase foui- of these valv(‘s. Another request pertaining to pa tient care and tn'atment canu' from the Nursing Service. This was foi' the i)urcliase of alternating ])ressure l)oint pads. These are used prinuirily foi' ])aralyzed, (■omatos(> and severely debilitated jjatients. 'Phey have })roven beneficial, also, to [)ainfully injured patients and tliose inuiu)- bilized by traction or casts. After considci'ation, the Board was ha])py to inform the Xursiug Servic(> that four pads would be ordered by the Auxiliary. Turning from the [jrofessional needs, the Board rc'viewed a letter fi-om ]\Ir. L. H. .Jordan, Assistant .Sui)ei'intend- ent, who asked assistance in “di'css- iiig up” the Waiting Room of the Out-Patient Department and the Med ical Outpatient Clinic. Planters have been built into the Clinic Waiting Room, and the Auxiliary was ask(‘d to consider financing the planting. It was advised that artificial ever greens be used due to the continiu*d expense involved in the planting and tending of live plants. We are liajijiy to report that several florists have been contacted and bids are coming in. Ho again the Auxiliary will play a ])art in helping to make and keej) Duke Ilosjjital attractive. (Please don’t think us boastful about our part in these activities— we only want to share with you oiu’ pleasure in having been able to help.) #*# *#* It’s that time of year again: Spring—j\ist around the corner.
