Pagd 4 Duke Hospital, InterGom From The Auxiliary By Dorothy Sieker The most important meetin" of the year, as far as the Auxiliary is con cerned, was held Ajiril 21st. New officers were elected and each service chairman read her annual report. All reported exciting: progress. Althou"h most services are staffed adequately with volunteers, several chairmen re ported “Mr. Stork” had taken a num ber of volunteers off “active duty.” We were reminded not to think un kindly of the big bird, however, for every baby girl he brings i.s a poten tial Duke Hospital Auxiliary volun teer ! Let me take this opportiuuty to ex tend the Auxiliary’s thanks to all the outgoing officers and service chair men, and give our heartiest welcome to the new officers who are: President Mrs. Theady Daniel First Vice-president airs. 0. With a “house” containing 7,570,925 cubic feet to be kept, the Director, Mrs. Martha J. Scoggins, eight supervisors and 90 em{)loyees have a full-time job, indeed. Heretofore Housekeeping offices were all located in the basement. To provide more efficient service to the Medical Center, a Housekeeper has now been located on each floor. Her desk, Math its identifying plaque, is easily accessible; notes may be left there so communication is simpler. Rooms can be cleaned earlier with the supervisoi- at hand, so service to both patient and business office is si)eeded uj). The Housekeeper' is able, also, to keep a better check on the linens, equipment and cleaning chemicals, and to get a bettei- inventory at all times. The Hou.sekee])er on the floor no^^■ has her own staff'. She is res])ousible for this personiu>l, and for time cards, name pins and area keys. She directs the work of her staff; has a better op- ])ortunity to know the workers; and can be on hand to teach the techniques needed in the particular area. This increased executive responsibility for each supervisor is an advantage to the individuals involved and to the Hospital by providing trained person nel for the future. A (’leaning Room in the basement has cabinets containing equipment for all special cleaning jobs and a black board which lists special work to be done with the area name. The em ployee checks his luuue on the board when he starts out on a job. He can then be located without difficulty in an emergency wherever he is in the Jledical ('enter. This check sy.steni makes it possible, also, to tell what work has been accomplished in a day. In the new' wing, where the high-low beds must be run up for cleaning, 80 minutes are lU'eded to clean a room Know Your Auxiliary.
