Private Medical Laboratory Bettye Hillman has left for John son City, Tennessee, where husband, Charles, will do private practice. Eleanor Blackman has left to ac cept a position at the V.A. Dr. Juan Pons who has been with us as a fellow in geriatric psychiatry for two years returns to Puerto Rico in June. Dr. Pons was Secretary of Health for Puerto Rico from 1946- 1957. He has been at Duke under a II. S. Public Health Service grant. His wife and son, Joe, have been with him in Durham. X-ray At the meeting of the North Caro lina Society of X-ray technicians, Washington Duke Hotel, April 17-18, Wiley R. Tice, R. T. of the depart ment of Radiology, was elected presi dent for the coming year. Laura Smith, })resident of the 1959 class in X-ray Technology, won first place for her exhibit. Weekly evening seminars are led by members of the various departments in the Jledical Center. In addition two periods each week are set aside for group discussion of hos pital problems, assigned reading and individual student ])rojects. In the field of practical experience, as the stiulent rotates through the depart ments, cooperation of the hospital staff" is ecpially important. The first two weeks are spent under the guidance of the program director getting ac quainted with the ])hysical i)lant and the key personnel of the institution. A short course in medical terminology and the processing and filing of pa tient’s records is given by the Medical Record Librarian. Three months each are spent working in the Admitting Office, Business Office and the Office of the Administrator. The Admit ting Office provides experience in deal ing with patients, ])hysicians and the many agencies which sponsor staff' ]ia- tients. In the Business Office the stu dent learns the' nuuiy ])hases of hos- pital business j)ractice, busiiu'ss rela tions with government aid ])rogi'ams, and practices specific to hospitals such as caring for })atients’ valuables aiul discharge procedures. In the Ad- nunistrator’s Office he gets a ])icture of the Superintendent’s daily activi ties and his approach to administra tive problems.
