Asking Around By Marie Price Supt^^ Cotnet By Charles H. Frenzel The task of keeping clean, attrac tive, and in good repair a y)lant as large as the Duke University Medical Center is gigantic. During an aver age 24 hour weekday over 6,000 pa tients, visitors, staff and students oc cupy its rooms and pass through its corridors. For the past 6 years there has not been a single day in which some ma jor construction or renovation w'as not in progress. This has added con siderably to the j)roblems of our Housekeeping Department in keeping the buildings clean. Over a year ago, recognizing that there was a need to improve the clean liness and appearance of our institu tion, an inspection program was in troduced and has been in operation since. T think you will agree with me that the appearance of our buildings is greatly improved as a result of the W'ork of Mr. Swanson, Mrs. Scoggins and many other participants of the program. It is not only the number of peoi)le occupying a building or the heavy schedule of activity carried on with in it that determines how nnich dam age and soil will accumulate; even more important are the habits of the occupants. It is surprising what a difference it makes in the general ap pearance of a building if cigarettes are always put in receptacles, trash is put in waste baskets, and proper care is taken of equipment and painted w'alls. Cleanliness is conta gious. Our patients and visitors can not help but follow the example set by our staff. I have often noted that the medical and hospital care patients receive in a clean, attractive hospital is thought (Continued on page 6) What would hel]) most to keej) our hospital cleaner? Hospital Administrator; If hosi)ital persoiniel would deposit paper cups, etc. in the trash containers and would pick up similar cups and bottles left lying around by visitors instead of depending on House keeping, the appearance would im prove. Senior Staff Member: Everything should be moved out of the halls of the hospital and the medical school so that cleaning could be done more efficiently. Medical Student: If personnel,' stu dents, staff members and visitors had a specific ])lace for eating in stead of eating in the halls, class rooms, lobby or any available space. Maid, Ilousekeepimj: Cooperation! Help the Housekeeping Depart ment by i)utting trash w'here it should go instead of putting it down wherever you happen to be.
