Page 4 Duke Hospital, InterGom From The Auxiliary By Dorothy Sieker My goodness, it’s time again to wish you all “Season’s Greetings!” This year—a very active one for the Auxiliary—has really whizzed by. Speaker for the fall Membership Meeting November 2 w'as Dr. C. R. Stephen, professor of Anesthesiology, who demonstrated the Jefferson Ven tilator, recently donated to his de partment by the Auxiliary. This res pirator perfected in 1955, Dr. Ste phen said, is rapidly replacing the cumbersome “iron lung.” Also ex hibited by Dr. Stephen were several of the latest emergency methods of resuscitation, among them mouth-to- mouth breathing, and the use of a “pipe-like” instrument called an air- w^ay. Made of hard rubber in the shape of an “S,” the air-w^ay is in serted in the victim’s mouth and the rescuer breathes into the other end. These air-ways come in adult and children’s sizes and are handy gadg ets for the family first aid kit. Dr. Stephen added. At the close of the meeting Mrs. A. N. Wiley, Hospital ity Chairman, assisted by members of her committee, served refresh ments. The Ways and Means Committee— after a successful June Pink Ele phant Sale (net profit $258.83)—has put in an energetic fall. The Sep tember showing of the Munyer col lection of linens, lingerie, laces and infants’ apparel met with an enthusi astic response and netted the Auxil iary about $200. For the past month the committee has been promoting sale of United Nations Children’s Fund Christmas cards. This year the sale was expanded, and many business firms in Durham have helped year the Thanksgiving Bake Sale, held Tuesday, November 24, was a complete sell-out before noon. Dr. and Mrs. Deryl Hart donated a tur key, and the Chapel Hill Street A & P, Mr. John Hayden, Manager, gave a fruit basket. A table of holi day decorations and greens was a favorite addition. Thanks to you all for taking time from busy schedules to contribute delicious items for the sale. And, of course, our thanks to all who supported the event. The profits from this sale will again help Santa fill the stockings for the pedia tric patients confined to the hospital on Christmas Day. Mrs. Julian Ruffin, Membershij) Chairman, has reported that informa tion concerning all services of the Duke Auxiliary is now being distrib uted by the Welcome Wagon, which visits all newcomers to Durham. We are most grateful for this new means of contact, and are happy to report several new volunteers have joined us through the Welcome Wagon. At the October tea of the Duke University Campus Club Mrs. Bayard Carter represented the Auxiliary. She ex plained to those interested the aims of the Auxiliary and its purpose. Printed information sheets were avail able giving the full working schedule and needs of the Auxiliary. While these two new means of acquainting the new and old residents of Durham with the Auxiliary activities have been effective, I should like to appeal again to all of you—new volunteers are always welcome and needed. Tuesday mornings at 11 A.M. has been set aside by Mrs. Ruffin and her committee to meet with new volun teers in the Auxiliary Office for a brief orientation program. The Aux iliary Office will be most happy to have interested volunteers call any day from Monday through Friday be tween !) and 5. Dial 9011 and ask for extension 3546. Take note: Christmas closing dates —Friday, December 18, 4 P.M. to Monday, January 4, 9:30 A.M. Have a happy holiday and we will see you next year—in a “pink smock ’ ’ r hope! by purchasing these cards to send to their business associates. Again this CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR. Mrs Lessie Patterson, nursing, aide on Howland ward, is shown above being congratulated by Mr. Charles Frenzel' Superintendent, on her selection as the Medical Center’s first Outstanding Employee of the Year. The Employee Recognition Program aims at singling out that employee who ex cels in job performance; relationships with patients, visitors and other employees- and over-all attitude. ’
