Duke Hospital, InterGom Page 5 Supt^^ Cotnet By Charles H. Prenzel A hospital after dark can be a lone ly and frightening place. The activi ties slow down, the multitude of staff, employees and visitors leave, but the 24 hour, 7 day coverage goes on. The emergencies continue to arrive, the critical patients are no less critical, and the many tasks that cannot be done in the daylight must be com- pleted. As we enjoy the picture story in this issue of the InterCom—The Hos pital at Night—it would be well if we think with appreciation of the dedi cated house staff, nursing personnel. Central Supply aides, housekeepers and many others who serv'e our pa tients during these difficult hours. The recent two big snows gave us another excellent opportunity to see the wonderful cooperation and spirit of the Medical Center staff. There were numerous instances of staff working two consecutive eight hour shifts. Over 40 people stayed over night in the hospital during the sec ond snow to be sure that a staff woidd be on hand in the morning. Many of the house staff helped out with nursing duties and many people with chains went miles out of their way to pick up colleagues to be sure the hos pital would be covered. It was a wonderful expression of loyalty to duty and concern for our patients. Our Women’s Auxiliary completes its tenth year of service to Duke Hospital this month. Each year since its organization it has provided more and more benefits to our jia- tients. A hearty “Thank you, well done” to this tine organization. Meet Warren Wagner Employee of Month Mr. Warren W’^agner, manager of the Hospital Storeroom, has been se lected as this issue’s Outstanding Employee of the Month. In appraising Mr. AVagner’s quali fications, those who nominated him cited his “pleasant, cheerful and helpful attitude”—“I have never known him to be rude or unpleasant to anyone.” One nomination stated that he is “one of the best, if not the best employee in the Medical Center. ” Warren Wagner Mr. Wagner was born in Durliam and lias S])ent all of his life here ex cept for service in the Army Ord nance Department in the Asiatic- Pacific Tiieater during World War 11. Prior to his employment at Duke Hospital in Seyitembcr, 1949, he was office manager for a local men’s clothing store. Mr. Wagner and his wife, who is chief clerk in the Hospital Post Office, live at 1920 Haverford Street. Additional selections for Outstand ing Employee of the Month will be made during the j'ear, and the Out standing Employee of the Year, se lected from the Employees of the Month, will be named in the last issue of Intercom for 1960. All per sonnel are encouraged to submit nominations for employees deserving recognition. Blanks are available in the Medical Center Personnel Office.
