Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 5 From The Auxiliary By Carolyn Ilaekiiey All rifjlit, Girls, liaek to Work! Who said that? We never left! The only Auxiliary service that vaca tioned this siuunier was the ni^ht coffee counter. (And if something doesn’t break for them pretty soon in the way of more volunteers, the vaca tion may prove permanent!) These women have served long and faithfully, usually coming in at the end of a full day in the office, and have i)ut in several hours of mi;ch needed and appreciated time. Now they desperately need help in the persons of more volunteers! Our Fall General Meeting was most exciting, for we honored the mothers of our Junior Volunteers. The hos pital staff with whom the girls worked was high in their praise. “They are so wonderful and so helpful; do w’c have to 'wait until next summer to have them again?” . . . “Whatever will we do Avlien they go back to school 1” . . . These were typical re marks from the various clinics where these delightful girls worked. The girls themselves found the ex perience helped to crystalize their thinking in terms of nu'dical careers. Several are now sure that nui-sing is the field for them while at least one girl is now quite sure that a nursing career would be a mistake for her. Others discovered technical fields tiuit intei'ested them and much interest was shown in careers in social work or as medical secretaries. Yes, the mothers of these young ladies nuiy be justly proud of their daughters and the 6700 hours tiiey sj)ent in service to others this past summer. f)etober 1!) and 20 will find our own Mrs. II. Shelton Smith in Atlanta where she will be the keynote speaker for the Institute for the Hospital Auxiliaries of Georgia. The theme is to be, “The Hospital Auxiliary and Public Relations,” a subject on which Mrs. Smith is definitely an expert. All of us at Duke are i)leased and proud that Mrs. Snuth has been ac corded this honor. Night coffee service volunteers, Nell O’Hriant and Dorothy Douglas, ]>rovide a cup of coffee and a word of friendly cheer for All'. Paul Colenum, here from Bedford, Virginia, to visit his wife, a hos])ital patient. More volunteers must be found for the evening hours if this service is to continue. Hospital Auxiliary Symposium Planned The time is NOW^! The place is HERB! The Hospital Auxiliary Symposium, sponsoi'ed this year by Duke Hos])ital Auxiliary, is on the eve of getting under way. The hosj)ital auxiliaries in the state have res])onded eagerly to this o])- portunity for discussion of common problems, and when October 11 and 12 unfold on the calendar we are going to have a “full house.” This enthu siastic evidence of need for mutual helj) and eollaboi’ation bodes well for the new State Auxiliary Council re cently incori)orated in the State Hos- ])ital Association, and challenges that grou]) to offer leadership to a state pro gram which will [)roniote the efforts of all hosj)ital auxiliaries in North Carolina. Guests of the current conference will attend a dinner in the Union Ballroom Wednesday night, October 11th, to hear the keynote address to be given by Mrs. Viola Pinanski of Brookline, Mass. Mrs. Pinanski is an outstanding auxilian, having devoted her life to eonniiunity activities, pri marily in the health field. She is a former chaii-inan of the National Council of Hospital Auxiliaries of the American Hospital Association and is, at the ])resent time, a member of the World Health Organization. It is a great i)rivilege to have her on this |)i'ogram. ((’ontinued on page 7) Hospital Auxiliary Symposium October 11 and 12 Theme: Workshoj) foi’ l*i-ogi'(>ss ami (irowth Wednesday—1 P. M. to 5 P.
