Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 7 ^ From The Auxiliary By Grace McClees Pardon me, but have you seen a ‘ ‘ walker ’ ’ running around loose ? The Auxiliary owns one (we keep it on Long), but it’s “long gone!” We’d appreciate its return, if it isn’t in use. Oh, you didn’t know we had any thing but coffee and shop equipment ? Dear friend, lend an ear and we’ll fill you in! There are two wheelchairs; a reader, for a patient flat on his back; a television set (loaned free) ; a radio (also free) ; a bedside table and a lap-board. Most of these items have been donated to the Auxiliarj'^ by individuals, and may be obtained by inquiring at the Auxiliary office. Speaking of inquiring, a number in(iuiring minds had a lot of (jues- ^P^ns answered recently. Starting on January 31, and continuing on suc cessive Wednesday afternoons through March 14, interested “Pink Ladies” were treated to a back-stage glimpse of the Duke Medical Center. Miss Lelia Clark, Director of Nurs ing Service, assisted by Mrs. John Macduff, Auxiliary president, made all of the arrangements for this Orientation Course, and they didn’t miss a thing from store-room, su])ply room and kitchen, to the Cobalt unit and premature nursery, plus back ground information on expenses, help, and income. The newer members of the organi zation were almost overwhelmed by the enormous amount of stock re- juired: soap, towels, alcohol; and the fantastic number of meals served. One lady w’as heard to remark, ‘ ‘ And 1 complain about three or four extra for dinner!” Altogether, it was a most exciting ^^perience—a truly fine course. Fire Demonstrations Held Each Week for Medical Center Employees Each W’ednesday afternoon on the patio area behind the Amphitheatre approximately ten of our employees learn how to use fire extinguishers, how to fight small fires and general principles of fire prevention. These demonstra tions, which are under the direction of Captain Ij. E. Foster and Firemen James Eubanks and Irwin Dilleliay of the Durham Fire Department, have been arranged by Charles C. Boone, Assistant Superintendent. In the above picture Virginia Williams is being instructed by Firemen Eubanks and Dillehay. Looking on are Clifford McDonald, Gaynell Wash ington, Elizabeth Pretty, Margaret Mickens, Annie Clark, Clara Jackson, Blossie Barnes, Arthur Page, and Bertha McRae. Since these demonstrations were begun in August 1960, approximately 600 of our employees have attended. Anyone interested in attending one of these demonstrations should call Extension 2713. Forbus Portrait to be Hung A portrait of Dr. Wiley D. Forbus will hang over the long bookcase in the Pathology Conference Room. The project w'as initiated by Dr. George Race, and the portrait is the gift of former house officers and staff' mem bers. Presented to the Medical Center sometime ago by Dr. George Margolis and accepted by Dr. W. C. Davison, the portrait was hung temporarily in the hall. Since the portrait shows Dr. Forbus giving a slide demonstration, the location in the Conference Room was deemed particularly appropriate.
