Page 2 Duke Hospital, InterCom Alris. JMargie Hrowii reyristors each patient as lie ai-- rives at the Outpatient Depai’tnient. Her patienee and good humor seem to have no end—a valuable asset in gettin" eaeh ])atient off to a happy start! In the rear can be seen the IIos])ital Auxiliary’s Snack Bar. This innovation in the new Outpatient Dei)artment makes life niueh more pleasant for both statl' and patients. The Auxiliary has also been most helpful at times in i)rovid- ing food for j)atients who eome long distances without the means to go to local restaurants to eat. Gone, fortunately, are the dark, crowded old days before the opening of the new Outpatient Department facilities in 1957! iP W.uim Airs. Kelcie Balance can be seen at the far left of this picture taken in her laboratory when the new' w'ing was opened in 1!)57. Mrs. Balance really keeps things hop ping, and last year her staff did 128,()()() procedures. The laboratory staff includes ilrs. Gertrude Woods and Mrs. Althalia Crawford—both at Duke for over ten years— Mrs. Virginia Whitfield, Jlrs. Peggy Roberts, Mrs. Betty Council, Mrs. Betty Hinshaw, Mrs. Barbara JIall and Mrs. I Jessie Day. Dr. .lay Arena is shown here with Father Donohue, di rector of the Catholic Orphanage in Raleigh, a nun and a group of children from the orphanage. Several years ago it came to Dr. Arena’s attention that these children had not had complete physical examinations in many years. P]veryoue at the Medical Center gladly coop erated, and over a period of months each of the children was checked completel.y free of charge. Now' a few of hese children with problems continue to be followed in he Outpatient Departnu>nt, as do children with unusual )roblems from other orphanages all over the state.
