DR. CHARLES E. MENGEL
Dr. Mengel Named
Markle Scholar
Dr. Charles Ej. Mengel, associate in
medicine, has been selected as one of
25 American and Canadian medical
scientists to receive a Markle Scholar
ship in Medical Science. The awards
are given by the John and Mary R.
Markle Foundation of New York to
support medical teachers and investi
gators early in their careers and thus
strengthen the facilities of medical
schools. Dr. Mengel's scholarship,
$6,000 annually for five years, will be
used in part to help finance his re
search activities and to enable him to
visit medical centers in this country
and abroad.

The laboratory’s research activities
have been expanded. One study on
portable electroencephalography is
the basis for the introduction of this
service in the Medical Center. Though
used to date only to take EEG’s in
patients’ rooms, it would be feasible,
if desirable, to go out into the com
munity. The laboratory is working
to develop a w'ater-soluble conductive
adhesive to eliminate use of collodion
in the hair. Completed or in progress
are studies relating to hypoglycemic
coma, cystic fibrosis, in-born errors of
metabolism, the caudate nucleus and

DR. JOSEPH W. BEARD
Dr. Joseph W. Beard has been named one of
Duke University’s 34 James B. Duke Pro
fessors m recognition of his professional
achievements. A Duke faculty member since
1937, Dr. Beard is director of the Medical
Center’s laboratory for the study of viruses
in relation to cancer.

This troika of service, teaching and
research gives the BEG laboratory the
same rewarding breadth of interest
evident in many a Medical Center
venture.
DR. JAMES F. GLENN
Dr. James Glenn
Appointed Urology
Chief
Dr. James F. Glenn has been ap
pointed professor and chief of the
Division of Urology at the Medical
Center. An associate professor of
urology at the Bowman Gray School
of Medicine, Winston-Salem, at the
time of his appointment. Dr. Glenn
assumed his responsibilities at Duke
on April 1.
Dr. Glenn is currently principal
investigator for the clinical drug
evaluation program of the Cancer
Chemotherapy National Service Cen
ter, National Institutes of Health;
and protocol adviser and investigator
for the Nin adjuvant bladder cancer
chemotherapy program.
He succeeds Dr. Edwin P. Alyea as
chief of the Division of Urology. Dr.
Alyea will relinquish his administra
tive duties but w'ill continue his clini
cal practice, teaching and research
activities. One of the original Medi
cal Center faculty members, he came
to Duke in 1930 and was responsible
for the organization and development
of the Division of Urology.
Dr. Glenn is a 1952 graduate of the
Duke University School of Medicine
and a former member of the resident
staff of urology. Before joining the
Bowman Gray faculty in 1961, he had
been a member of the faculty at Yale.
