Duke Univhrsh \ Medicai. Center, InterCom Page 5 BEFORE renovation, the Departments of Pathology and Physiology and Pharmacology had labs similar to the one pictured above. Renovated Laboratories Combine Efficiency and Comforl by Virginia Swain Willi recent renovations, the Ue- partnH'uts of I’alhology and Physi ology and Pharmacology are now of fering their students and instructors laboratory facilities which are more convenient, comfortable and c.ondu- cive to study. Instructors are finding that stu dents are spending more study time in the laboratories and that the new facilities are resulting in increased efficiency. Laboratory equipment, once kept in a storeroom, is now conveniently located in cabinets inside the lab area. This immediate availability of equip ment is proving to be more convenient and efficient for both the instructor and the student. New lighting facilities have been added to aid eyesight, as well as study and research. The renovated laboratory j)ictured below (right), which is located in the Department of Physiology and Phar macology, reveals the careful i)lan- ning that preceded its renovation. Designed with flexibility in mind, tile lab can be used for several areas of research and experimentation, (’eiling fixtures for gas, vacuum and air can be hooked into the lab tables. And, when it is deemed necessary, the lab tables can be moved to provide space for one of the various operating tables. These improvenuuits mean that this one lab Can be used for study in the fields of electroi)hysiology, microbiology and biochemical phar- nmcology. Also provided in the laboratory is the convenience of folding “room di viders." This provision has given much Hexibility to teaching. Indi vidual and group conferences can be held in the lab, which can be divided into four separate areas. The “di viders” make it possible to have mor> than one instructor in the lab at the* same time and more than one experi ment under way in the same class. Because it can be sectioned off, this lab is a popular one in the sunnner months. During this time, it is often used by those medical and gradtuite students who are working under fel lowships and need a lab in which they can do research for a minimum of three to four months. (('ontinned on page (i) AFTER renovation, the labs took on a new face, exemplified by this new laboratory in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.
