TORNADO MOBILIZES DISASTER TEAM. On May 6 report of a tornado striking the
married student housing area put into action the Duke Medical Center’s disaster plan. Above,
victims are treated at the scene or removed by stretcher and truck to the hospital.
Below, shows the triage (sorting) area in the hospital where casualties are routed to the
proper treatment areas. One of a series of annual drills which have included a simulated
train wreck, plane crash, roof cave-in, and explosion, this exercise was designed, in par
ticular, to test medical decision making by students under disaster conditions. The annual
drill is a phase of the standing disaster program which the Duke Medical Center maintains
as a part of its responsibility to the community.
