Thirty years is a short time in the
life of an institution or organization
but it represents the major part of
the productive life of an individual.
When thirty years of an individual’s
talents are given to the first thirty
years of an organization, they are
particularly meaningful as tliey tend
to set the pattern and the rate of
progress of the enterprise. We are
esi)ecially grateful, therefore, to the
over 50 staff members w’ho completed
thirty years of service to the medi
cal center prior to October 1 of this
year. Of only slightly less impact
is the service of over twenty years
given by over 80 staff' members hon
ored at a ceremony December 3. The
contributions of these two groups will
have a lasting effect upon the image
of the Duke University Medical Cen
ter.
To those of us who have joined the
medical center family more recentlj".
tliese colleagues have given an ex-
ami>le, a heritage, and a challenge to
continue the progress for our medi
cal center that they have begun so
Avell. I can only pity the members
of our staff whose lack of interest or
whose selfish interest does not permit
them the pleasure of having j>ride
in the accomplishment or excitement
in the future of their institution.
I would like to take this opportuni
ty to thank all who expressed con
cern and well wishes during my
recent illness. Happily, my illness
was minor and at this writing 1 am
back in full harne.ss, hopefully having
learned from the experience.
