Duke University Medical Center, InterGom Page 3 A Chapel for Duke University Medical Center As Duke Medical Center expands to meet the ever-inereasiii" physical needs of ])atients, it becomes increas ingly important for vis to stop and consider some of the j)atients’ more intanf^ible needs. Quietness, j)rivacy and compassion are three everyday needs of the patient, his family and his friends. And yet, here at Duke we have little space to allot to “privacy” and much activity that disturbs ((uietness. Com passion is provided at various levels, but there is no one place where all three needs may he met at one time. Most of us are actitely aware of these needs and welcome the news that somethin" is bein" done to meet them. A ])lan is now underway in the Medical Center for a Relij^ious Center. This Religious Center Avill be located in the area (which is now a courtyard) directly behind the I)resent nuiin lobby of the hospital, on the first floor level. Included in the plan are: a Prayer Chapel, Family Meditation Rooms, Pastoral Counseling Rooms, a Lounge for the relatives of critically ill patients, and the offices of the Chai)lains. .'l!250,000 is the estimated cost. iSupport for the Religious Center has been enthusiastic and encourag ing. Even before the formal approval of the ])lan, the Women’s Auxiliary contributed sfil o,()()(); and subsequent contributions have increased this to more than .'{)8o,0()0. Then, in lf)61, a Xorth Carolina Family initiated a memorial fund which now exceeds •i:2r),()(H). Last year, a discretionary fund was established for the use of the Chaplain to the Medical Center. This fund is intended to be an expression of the coni])assion of many people as a memorial to many others. Any jierson may contribute to the Clui])- lain’s Fund for Compassion in mem ory of anyone he so desires. The Medical Center needs aid in building the Religious Center, and is asking for assistance. The following information may help you to advise patients, relatives, and friends on how they may give. Contributions in any amount will be gratefully accepted. The contribu tions may be either designated or un- designated. When making contributions, i)lease have the cheek nuide payable to Duke University and mailed or taken in ])erson to: The Reverend P. Wesley Aitkeu Chaj)lains Service Duke University Medical Cc'nter Durham, North Carolina ‘277()(> It is pos.sible for several frieiuls to combine their contributions into one memorial gift.
