June 1965 Duke University Medical Center, InterCom Page 5 From The Auxiliary With the coming of Springtime tlie Auxiliary made plans for our candystripers to join us for the sum mer. On ilay 16 the girls were in vited to Baker House for an orienta tion session given by Mrs. Robert Colver, our Vice-President, and Mrs. Charles Daugherty, our ('o-ordinator of Volunteers. After the meeting, re freshments were served by j\Irs. E. M. Webb. There are over one hundred girls in our candystriper program this summer. In early June Mrs. Shelton Smith, Mrs. Kay Brown, and Mrs. Alan ilan- chester attended the North Carolina Hospital Association meeting in Ashe ville for three days. Representatives from auxiliaries all over the state came together to participate in work shops planned by Mrs. Smith, w'ho served as general chairman of the meeting for the Auxiliaries. Also in June ]\Irs. Bayard Carter and I went to Lincoln Hospital to participate in the installation of new officers in the Lincoln Auxiliary. Fourteen years ago Mrs. Carter and the late Mrs. Virginia Eagle started Lincoln Hospital Auxiliary w'ith our hospital Auxiliary as sponsor. It Avas very gratifying to see the growth of their organization and learn of the many good things they accomplish for their hospital. We are sorry to lose several of our excellent Auxiliary members due to their moving away from Durham. The Coffee Service will miss ]\Irs. T. David Elder, Mrs. John Warner, Mrs. Ruth King, Mrs. Lowell Hill ■ Shop Cart, Miss Joyce Harris; Chil dren’s Service, Mrs. Ilallam Walker; Free Magazines, Mrs. W^illiam ACCOLADE to our receptionists Photo Dy Kichara McKee Acting as Hostesses for the entire Medical Center is the chief responsi bility of our six receptionists. Pictured above is Mrs. Lillian Trevathan as she answers one of the many unusual questions asked of her each day. Our Receptionists work at two information desks, one in the Main Lobby and one in the P.D.C. Lobby. The responsibilities are numerous, but they normally involve giving information and assistance to patients, visitors, and staif. Providing information on the patients’ general condition is one of the major duties. Giving directions to visitors (and even Medical Center Personnel) is another valuable service performed by the Receptionists. The Information Desk also serves as a delivery point for items for patients and staff. Although the work at times is hectic, the Recejitionists report it to be very interesting. Every person has a different question or need. Each receptionist can share a great number of “unusual” stories, but it will sufifice to say that the lunisual becomes the expected. The Medical Center wishes to thank our Hostesses for the kind of service they extend to our visitors and patients. It is rewarding to see that the Receptionists find the work interesting as evidenced by the thirty-five years tenure of Mrs. Trevathan and more than twenty years service of ]\h-s. ilary Bishop. We extend our appreciation to these individuals and their col leagues : Gladys Noell, Edith Patton, Elsie (’ooke and Alargaret Taylor. Llaughan. Our board will be losing a most valuable member when Mrs. James Wyngaarden moves to Pennsyl vania. Her direction of the rummage sale this past spring made it a most successful event. We are sorry to see you go, Ethel, and say “many thinks” for all your efforts on behalf of our Auxiliary. Hope everyone has a grand sum mer ! Betty Leach The InterCom Committee Avislies to thank Mrs. John (Peggy) War ner for all that she has done for the InterCom as a representative for the Women’s Auxiliary. We are sorry to see her leave DUilC, but we wish her the very best in her family’s move to Tennessee. Mrs. Julian Ruffin will be the new Auxiliary representative.
