J)r. Jerome S. Harris, Profes

ment of Pediatries, has been
selected the first J. Buren Sid
bury Professor of Pediatrics.
The distinguished professor
ship was conferred by Dr.
Dou"las M. Knight, Duke Presi
dent, in evening ceremonies held
October 12.
The professorship, created
from an endowment by Dr. Sid
bury, was set up by the Duke
trustees as a tribute to tlie Wil
mington pediatrician who is con
sidered one of North Carolina’s
pioneers in the treatment of
diseases of children.
Dr. Harris joined the Duke
faculty in 1937 and holds ap
pointments in botli pediatrics
and biochemistry. A graduate of
Dartmouth College, Dr. Harris
received his M.D. from llarvai’d
iledical School and underwent
additional training in hosj)itals
in Boston, Chicago, and at Duke.
He has conducted extensive
research in metabolic diseases of
cliildren and in pediatric cardi
ology. At the present time he is
a member of the Human Embry
ology and Developmental Study
Section of the National Insti
tutes of Health.

DR. GUY L. ODOil, chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, and

Resections Intracranial Neoplasms” at the Annual Meeting of the
American Academy of Neurological Surgery, held in Cincinnati,
Ohio, October 14-16.

M. S. MAHALEY, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, who j)re-
sented a paper describing his research on “Immunology of Brain
Tumors” (see article, page 3). Dr. Mahaley also gave a brief
description of his research at the loth Anniuil ^Meeting of the Con
gress of Neurological Surgeons, Inc., held in Chicago, 111., October
27-.‘!0. An article describing Dr. ]\Iahaley’s research will ap])ear in
a future issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery.
DR. DAVID C. SABFSTON, JR., Professor and (’hairman of tlie
De])artment of Surgery, was invited to Tnlane University School
of Medicine, New ()rleans. La., as Visiting Professor of Surgery,
September 80-0ctober 2. As a visiting Professor, Dr. Sabiston
lectured on “The Patho-Physiology and Diagnosis of Pulmonary
Embolism.” During his visit he was jire.sented a copy of The Life
of Dr. Rudolph Matas, M’orld famed vascnilar surgeon who is a
former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at
Tulane University Scliool of Medicine. (Ed. Note: It is for Dr.
Randolph ]\Iatas that the Duke Hos])ital ward, ]\Iatas Ward, is
named.)
DR. RICHARD G. LESTER, Professor and Chairman of the De
partment of Radiology, instructed a course in “Congenital Heart
Disease” at the American Heart Association ]\leeting in Bal Har
bour, Fla., October 13-19.
A Welcome is extended to DR. EMILE LECLERCQ of Lieges,
Belgium, who is visiting for one montli in the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Leelercq is a former resident on
Endocrinology.

At the October 14-17 meeting of the Psychonomie Societv in Chi
cago, 111., DR. BEN W. FEATHER, Assistant Professor of
Psychiatry, delivered an address on “Recent Experiences in Hu
man Salivary Conditioning.”
DR. FELIX PIRCHER, Director of the Radioisotope Division,
received a Certificate of Merit for his exhibit at the Roentgen Ray
Society Meeting in Washington, D.C. September 28-October 1. He
presented the same exhibit November 1-4 at the Southern Medical
Association in Houston, Texas.
