Elchlepp PROFESSION4L NEWS DR. JANE G. ELCHLEPP, Assistant Professor of Pathology, has been named assistant dean for planning of education facilities. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, Dr. Elchlepp will now also be involved in help ing to plan future Medical Center educational facilities. Dr. Elchlepp joined the Duke faculty in 1956, after receiving her M.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1955. In attendance at the American College of Surgeons sectional meeting in Bal Harbour, Florida, was DR. DAVID C. SABIRTON, JR., Chairman of the Department of Surgery, who took part in a clinic during the two-day meeting which drew over 500 doctors. DR. BAYARD CARTER, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, delivered the Carl E. Lewis Memorial Lecture before the Medical Society of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi, January 4. He lectured on “Carcinoma of the Vulva” and “Endometriosis.” DR. JAMES B. SIDBURY, JR. was appointed Visiting Professor in Pediatrics at Boston Uni versity for the month of January. DR. ROY T. PARKER, Chairman of the Depart ment of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was invited as a visiting lecturer for residents and faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, January 19. Ilis lecture was entitled “Ovarian Carcinoma—Prob lems in Diagnosis and Treatment in Future.” Sidbury DR. JOSEPH W. BEARD, James B. Duke Professor of Surgery in charge of experimental surgery, has been promoted to pro fessor of virology. He was formerly an associate professor of virology. DR. CHARLES E. LLEWELLYN, JR., A.ssociate Professor of Phychiatry, participated in the Harvard Visiting Faculty Semi nars in community psychiatrj^ held in Boston January 23 to Februarv 5. The background paper prepared by DR. CARL EISDORFER, Associate Professor of Medical Psychology, and entitled “Psy- chophysiological Aspects of Learning in the Aged: A Tentative Theory” was delivered at the National Conference on Manpower Traiiung and the Older Worker, January 17-19 at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D. C. The conference was sponsored by the Committee on Employment and Retirement of the National Council on the Aging in cooperation with The United States Department of Labor and The United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare. DR. DELFORD L. STICKEL, Assistant Professor of Surgery, has been appointed chief of the surgical service at the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital. As chief of surgery. Dr. Stickel is responsible for the surgical care of all the Durham VA Hospital patients. Although his office will now be located at the VA Hospital, Dr. Stickel will continue to carry out his duties at Duke in teaching, patient care, and research. As chief of surgery, Dr. Stickel succeeds DR. RAYMOND W. POSTLETHWAIT, who has been promoted to chief of staff at the Durham VA Hospital. Eight faculty members in the Department of Biochemistry have been promoted to the rank of full professor. The new pro fessors, all elevated from the rank of associate professors, are DR. MARY L. C. BERNHEIM, DR. EUGENE A. DAVIDSON, DR. ROBERT L. HILL, DR. HENRY KAMIN, DR. RALPH E. THIERS AND DR. SALIH J. WAKIL, all former associate pro fessors of biochemistry; DR. SAMSON R. GROSS, formerly as sociate professor of microbiology; and WALTER R. GUILD, formerly associate professor of biophysics. RUBY DECKER, former Director of the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Texas at Galveston, has returned to Duke as a visiting professor for the spring seme.ster. DR. EWALD W. BUSSE, Chairman of the De partment of Psychiatry, spoke at the Pastor’s Conference of the North Carolina Council of Churches in Raleigh, January 25. His topic was “The Aging Process—Physical and Psychosocial. ” Decker A .')i32,083 grant has been awarded by the Na tional Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, to DR. BENJAMIN F. TRUMP, Associate Pro fessor of Pathology, for kidney research. Specifically, Dr. Trump’s work involves study ing structural and functional changes in the cells in the kidneys after various types of injuries. Dr. Trump has been doing this research for three years. DR. CHARLES E. RACKLEY has joined the medical faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an assistant professor of medicine. For the past year Dr. Rackley has been an associate in medicine at Duke. Duke University recently received a research grant of $30,755 from the Public Health Service branch of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington. The grant will be used by DR. BENJAMINE WITTELS of the Pathology De partment for research of cardiac metabolism in congestive heart failure. DOROTHY TATE, Director of Dietetics, participated in the Mid year Conference for Dietetic Internship Staffs, which was spon sored by the American Dietetic Association and held at the Uni versity of Chicago, January 24-28. DR. PHILIP HANDLER, James B. Duke Professor of Biochem istry and Chairman of the Department, recently travelled to the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu and Maui to participate in the Asia Pacific Seminar, held January 20-February 3. The Asia Pacific Seminar was the first of a series of travel seminars to be organized in the United States and abroad by the Institute on Man and Science. The seminar consisted of 80 selected men and women “seeking to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live.” Dr. Handler spoke on the “Frontiers of Science.” Other speak ers included General Carlos P. Romulo, President, University of the Philippines; Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Under-Secretary, The United Nations; Mr. Norman Cousins, Editor of The Saturday Review; and Dr. Everett R.
