THEY WILL NOT SOON BE FORGOTTEN Johnnie Fearrington On April 30, 1966, Johnnie (J. W.) Fearrington, assistant superintendent of utilities at Duke University, passed away. Johnnie had served the university continuously for more than 39 years, which represents essentially liis entire working life. Those of us who knew him well have and have had a very high respect for him as a person, for his abilities, his con siderate friendship, and for his high personal integrity. He was liked and respected by everyone. He had the interest of the university at heart and was always cooperative and anxious to serve when needed. His calm, efficient, and intel ligent supervision of personnel and his elfective performance as a mediator of personnel differences and complaints was outstanding. Johnnie Fearrington was a devoted family man. He and his entire family are well liked and an asset to the connnunity in which they live. We and Duke University have lost a valued friend and associate, and the university has lost a competent and faithful employee. W. Ken Howard Chief Maintenance Engineer Earesell Richardson ilr. Surviving are his wife, a son, and two daughters. Dorothy E. Tate Director, Dietetics Miss Mildred Sherwood To her small patients she was the good fairy of story book fajiie—bringing with her mere presence and gentle touch the things they needed most: relief from pain, love for the un loved, and comfort for the frightened. And she looked the part of the good fairy—petit, (piick in movement and in speech—in her dainty, high-crowned cap and neat white uniform. To her nursing students she gave—sometimes without our realization—a dare to care for children, both with our hearts and with our hands. She taught by example in her practical minded, understanding way, and was to us all the symbol of excellence, the epitome of pediatric nursing. This one tiny nurse left with her many nursing students a tremendous legacy: the knowledge and understanding to give good nursing care to the sick “little people” who are our patients. Mary C.
