It was also announced at the They ’re here again! On June 13 fifty young girls began their orientation into the Duke University Medical Center candystriper program ; over half were returning for their second summer of candystriping. They will be working for areas which in May had an o])portu- nity to request their assistance. During that month, Mrs. Mary banquet that Fran Morgan, sec retary to Dr. Arthitr Christakos, had been selected for the best in sportsmanship and Patricia Clark, an employee in the Hos pital Business Office, for the most improved. It is hoped that next year the DUMC Bowling League can form two more teams. Any university employees or depen dents who are interested in join- Daugherty, administrative sec retary of the Hospital Auxiliary and director of the candystriper program, sent check sheets to different departmental areas and ward supervisors asking if they desired candystripers during the summer and, if so, in M’hat ca pacity and when. The younger volunteers, ages fourteen and fifteen (fourteen is the minimum age at Duke for candystriping), are now serving in the Outpatient Department and the subdivisions of OPD, Pliysical Therapy, Radiation Therapy, Plastic Dressing Koom, and the Post Office. Experienced candystripers and adult auxili ary vounteers conducted an ori entation program for these younger girls; the different areas, however, are responsible for any special training. Older and more experienced candystripers participated in a training session conducted by Mrs. Inez James, an instructor in the Pediatric L. P. N. Post graduate Program. These older girls luive patient contact work on the wards and are trained to jierform such duties as: answer ing call lights, combing patients’ hair, feeding patients and set ting them up for meals, fixing flowers for patients, making un occupied beds, passing and col lecting trays, passing out mail, reading to patients, running er rands, transporting patients to and from areas, and w'riting let ters for jiatients. THEY mm lii THE IIOIV’ They bowled in the bowling lanes at New Orleans, and tliey ‘ ‘ placed in the money ’ ’! Such is the good news learned from the five Duke participants in the 1966 Woman’s Interna tional Bowling League National Cliampionship Tournament— Mary Lou Pate, assistant direc tor of Dietetics and captain of the team; Yvonne Ausley, head cashier in the Hospital Business Office; Polly Jordan, payroll clerk in ^Maintenance; Mary Ann Lucas, secretary in Armj' Ordnance Research; and Jackie Mitchel, now executive secretary for Tomlinson Co., Inc. The five went as representa tives of the Duke University Medical Center Bowling League; they were the first team to be entered by the league in a W^'IBC tournament. Nine games Avere bowled by the Duke bowlers, as they com peted with over 20,400 top ama teur bowlers from across the United States and from several foreign countries. Three games were bowled in the doubles, three in the singles, and three as a team. Polly Jordan and Mary Lou Pate placed in the first division in doubles by one pin. There were 4,164 entries and 1,388 chances to place. They placed 821st with a total pin fall of 1,008 pins. Jackie Mitchel and Mary Ann Lucas placed in the second divi sion in doubles. There were 4,159 entries, and 1,387 chances to place. They placed 955th with a total pin of 899. Polly Jordan also placed in the singles, second division. There were 7,423 entries and 2,375 chances to place. She placed 1,622nd with a total pin fall of 458. The tourney was exciting, but the total pin fall disappointed the bowlers. ‘ ‘ Our total pin fall was low,” remarked ilary Lou Pate, captain of the team, “but all pins were low because the high humidity of New Orleans made the pins ‘dead.’ ” The pin fall may have been low, but the team returned with five cash awards and a most memorable trip that more tlian helped make up for the losses suffered because of the New Or leans climate. Candystripers Sue Mann, Pam O’Briant, and Patricia Dawkins try on their new pinafores. Sue and Pam have mothers working at Duke. Mrs. Mann is a research assistant in Dr. Ivan Brown’s lab, and Mrs. O ’Briant is in the Medical PDC Insurance Office. Pink Stripes Return to Hallways and Wards INTERCOM - 8
